Dear Friends, Neighbors and Members of St. Cyprian's,

One of the most important prayers for me during seminary was written by a much beloved faculty member of Virginia Theological Seminary, Dr. Charles Philip Price. The prayer is in the back of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer on page 826. I thought of this prayer recently as St. Cyprian's joyfully celebrated the accomplishment of bringing back a favorite fundraising activity with the BBQ & Rummage Sale and also as we continue to wrestle with the many challenges, stresses and disappointments of being a west coast urban church in the 21st century.

Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all that you have
done for us. We thank you for the splendor of the whole
creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life,
and for the mystery of love.

We thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for
the loving care which surrounds us on every side.

We thank you for setting us at tasks which demand our best
efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy
and delight us.

We thank you also for those disappointments and failures
that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you alone.

Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the
truth of his Word and the example of his life; for his steadfast
obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying,
through which he overcame death; and for his rising to life
again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom.

Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know him and
make him known; and through him, at all times and in all
places, may give thanks to you in all things. Amen.

May we each at Turk & Lyon (and beyond) find a balance between lives that delight us and that help us acknowledge our dependence on a higher power. Hopefully, everything that happens here, whether overtly religious or not, is about offering space for hard work, delight, healing and interdependence.

See you soon at Turk & Lyon!

Peace,

Will

San Francisco Foundation Awards Grant to St. Cyprian's

We are excited and honored to receive a grant from the San Francisco Foundation to help us engage new populations in our Western Addition community, especially those whose circumstances make it difficult to participate in cultural and educational programs. With the foundation's support, cyprian's arc will present four free concerts combined with resilience skill-building activities during the next twelve months.

"We look forward to each of you showing what power there is in a small grant," said Tessa Rouverol Callejo, Program and Civic Engagement Officer for the San Francisco Foundation's FAITHS program

at a May 30th grantee meeting.

Forty-three non-profits organizations and congregations in the Bay Area received up to $5000 each in this year's grant cycle. The foundation's program supports community service, civic engagement, or cultural and artistic projects undertaken by congregations or faith-based organizations. Cyprian's arc - a center for the arts, resilience and community is an initiative of St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church.

Michael Helquist, director of the center, described the opportunity the grant presents. "We named this new effort the Arts & Resilience Challenge. The challenge for us will be to identify the best strategies to engage neighbors in the arts and resilience programs we initiated last year. To date we haven't had the resources to do so." He noted that within six blocks of Turk and Lyon there are four transitional housing centers for youth, seniors and families. The new project will include individuals in private homes.

Look for the first free concert and resilient event at Turk and Lyon in August. Please share your ideas for the occasion and let us know if you can help make this a very successful use of a small grant. Contact:events@cyprians.org

Parents: Need a night on your own for a stroll, a meal, a movie or just some quiet?

Several neighborhood parents suggested we host a Parents Night Out, and our first venture starts in June. Here's a chance to drop off the kids at Cyprian's and you're on your own.

Fun, food and skill-building for kids: board games, cooking demos, movies, good food to eat, and crafts.

Child-care provided by USF graduates and other experienced child-care providers with at least one adult for every five kids and a supervisor present at all times.

Here's how it works:

  • Kids ages 6-12
  • 15 kids max for this first time
  • Drop-off time 5:45 pm to 6:00 pm
  • Pick-up 8:45 pm to 9:00 pm
  • Kids must be signed-in by a parent or guardian
  • Earlier pick-ups ok but kids must be "signed-out" by a parent or guardian before leaving
  • $30 per child paid at time of drop-off

Parents are signing up already, don't miss this opportunity in June.

Pre-registration by June 8th required - events@cyprians.org
