Dear Friends, Neighbors and Members of St. Cyprian's,
The tragedy that is the Trayvon Martin case has reminded us all that racism and guns are still very much part of American life. While talking heads on television debate, argue, pontificate, exploit, point fingers and scapegoat --- our hearts break for the young man who is dead and the family who have lost their beloved son. We also pray for the conscience of the man who chased this child down, whose hands pulled the trigger and who must deal with the ramifications of his actions. Our Holy Week & Easter faith teaches us that even horrific events like this can offer up the possibility for healing and hope. Deeper conversations are happening and we pray that this nation may be led into greater sensitivity, compassion, and justice. We have prayers to say, we have stories to share, and we have work to do.
My first awareness of racism was in elementary school when my family hosted a child from New York City as part of the Fresh Air Fund at our home in Winchester, Virginia. Our neighborhood was so unwelcoming that he had to return home early. Some fresh air that was! The experience left a mark on my six year old heart, being introduced to a new friend and family member one day, and then having to say goodbye within a few short days because the attitudes of those around us were so cruel.
As the season of Lent draws to a close, we enter Holy Week together beginning with Palm Sunday on April 1st. I am filled with gratitude for the sacred journey we are sharing. Being part of a community of faith is gift that we humans come to appreciate the more we encounter the challenging questions of life, painful struggles, loss, grief, and injustice. As followers of Jesus we are to be a people grounded in the reality of this world yet with hearts on fire for the realm of God, where justice, truth and love reign. This sacred week that the faithful have walked for ages has profound wisdom to share with us in this time and place. This world needs the liberating and healing gospel message today as ever.
In the week ahead at Turk & Lyon we bring with us our frustration with the way things are, the tragedy of the Trayvon Martin case and the continual racism in our society, our frustrations with economic inequality, and the anxieties and stresses of just trying to keep things together. Do join us as we sing hosanna and wave palms this Sunday, on Wednesday witness the Stations of the Cross, on Thursday engage the story of Jesus' Last Supper, and on Good Friday listen reflect on his last words from the cross. Easter Sunday we celebrate the mystery of Christ's resurrection.
On Easter Sunday, April 8th --- in addition to celebrating Christ's triumph over the powers of death, we will also celebrate St. Cyprian's 89th year in San Francisco. Following our lively celebration upstairs, downstairs a festive home-style meal will be shared, and a brief preview of the St. Cyprian's Oral History Project will be shown. If you would like to contribute to the Easter Sunday Feast, please contact St. Cyprian's Norma Planiczka who is coordinating the event by calling 415-648-1232.
See you soon at Turk & Lyon!
Peace,
Will

Kitchen Fund Gets a Shot in the Arm

Students learning to use fresh produce in Cyprian's Kitchen
|
We are happy to announce that our plans for the community kitchen got a boost this week with a grant from a private foundation in the amount of $12,351. Connections made through the Bay Area Episcopal network led to an act of grace, when Tom and Roulhac Austin, members of St. Mary the Virgin who are active in the Diocesan Church Growth Program referred us to the foundation and shepherded our application. We are so very grateful for this support; the funds will be earmarked for the purchase of a double convection oven.
If YOU want to be a part of making a community kitchen a reality, visit www.saintcyprianssf.org/community-kitchen to learn more and to donate. And, of course, be sure to come to our fundraising barbecue on Saturday, May 5.

What's happening in April with
Cyprian's arc - a center for the arts, resilience & community by Michael Helquist
Thanks to our neighbors, friends and collaborators, our April calendar of events reflects the themes we envision for this hub of community-building and collaboration. Art and music for all ages, staying strong and healthy with exercise and yoga, and coming together for community meals. Please take a look and Save Some Dates.
During March Cyprian's deepened its relationships with the University of San Francisco and the San Francisco Day School. On Sunday, April 29 the USF Environmental Studies Senior Capstone will hold a Sustainability Block Party on two blocks of Golden Gate Avenue featuring five hours of kids games, great food, music, and sustainability demos. Cyprian's is working with USF students and faculty to plan the party, and the parents and students of SF Day School are helping with resources and activities. Together, we build resilience in our neighborhoods.
Cyprian's grows and prospers only with the help and guidance of our community. We extend a huge thank you to the dozen neighbors who form our Advisory Council. Hope to see many of you at Turk and Lyon and in the neighborhood in the weeks ahead.

Stations of the Cross in St. Cyprian's Sanctuary Lent 2012 Image above Station 1
With this cross are the portraits of nine 20th century martyrs, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Maura Clarke, Elizabeth Feodorovna, Ita Ford, Dorothy Kazel, Martin Luther King, Jr., Maximilian Kolbe, Janani Luwum, and Oscar Romero. The text in the background is, from bottom to top, the article from the U.S. Constitution permitting the death penalty, the Federal law about the death penalty, and the Anglican Church's statement about the death penalty. Image above is of Station #4 "Jesus meets his Mother"
ABOUT THE ARTIST Nathaniel Lewis

Nat Lewis was born in 1970, and grew up in Davis, California. He has a B.A. in Environmental Studies from UC Santa Cruz, and is a self-taught sculptor, working with found objects. He has shown in Sacramento, San Francisco, and Oakland.
Nat began making crosses and crucifixes as a Lenten discipline in the early aughts. He feels that reusing something discarded by our society is an important action environmentally, and spiritually represents our chance at a new life through our faith. The Stations of the Cross, commissioned by All Souls Church in Berkeley in 2010, were an opportunity to broaden the scope of Nat's regular creations from a snapshot to a story. Nat teaches middle school mathematics on the Peninsula, where he also finds the time to share the art of bending wire with his students.
