Dear Friends, Neighbors and Members of St. Cyprian's,
Last night, at the close of St. Cyprian's Lenten Series dinner and conversation, a group of us gathered around the altar and said Night Prayer, a form of Compline from the New Zealand Prayer Book. In the middle of the service, surrounded by silence, Hannah read this Rainer Maria Rilke poem shared in our series book, Radical Welcome,
God speaks to each of us as he makes us, then walks with us silently out of the night.
These are the words we dimly hear:
You, sent out beyond your recall, go to the limits of your longing. Embody me.
Flare up like flame and make big shadows I can move in.
Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final. Don't let yourself lose me.
Nearby is the country they call life. You will know it by its seriousness.
Give me your hand.
"Don't let yourself lose me" Earlier this week, when visiting one of our church's beloved elders in the hospital, a family member read a passage of scripture from John's gospel, "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you, abide in my love." The elder was asked what does abide mean to you, she responded "stay with me." When a loved one dies, when we die, our faith teaches us that this abiding continues and deepens. We stay with the Divine presence, and the Divine presence stays with us. "Let everything happen..." The congregation of St. Cyprian's knows a whole lot about abiding, about holding God's hand as we make our way in the serious country called life. What we do together every week standing around the altar, lighting candles, saying prayers, reading and singing old wise words, breaking bread, and sharing the cup is all about staying with God as we individually and together "let everything happen to me (us), beauty and terror." What a gift to stand with you as we give our hand to God. See you soon at Turk & Lyon! Peace,
Will St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church 415-987-3029 turkandlyon@gmail.com

SF Live Arts at Cyprian's presents... Will Durst and Roy Zimmerman in Live from the Starving Ear Friday March 9 @ 8 pm $16 advance / $18 door / $14 kids, students with ID, 65 & older Only at Cyprian's will you get the double-barreled, all-out stings from political pundit Will Durst and musical satirist Roy Zimmerman. These top performers will re-create San Francisco's famed North Beach nightclub, the hungry i. Will Durst really says it best about himself. This bit from The Will Durst Journal, March 2, 2012: Acknowledged by peers and press alike as one of the premiere political satirists in the country, Will Durst has patched together a comedy quilt of a career, weaving together columns, books, radio and television commentaries, acting, voice overs and most especially, stand-up comedy into a hilarious patchwork of outraged and outrageous common sense. His abiding motto is "You can't make up this stuff." The New York Times thinks Durst is pretty amazing as well, describing him as "possibly the best political comic in the country." With a background of 108 jobs - including work as an oyster shucker, radio talk show host, and margarine smuggler - Durst knows from what he talks about. (Margarine smuggling?) We probably won't hear him claim he likes to fire people, but you know he has some words about one who does. Pair the barbs of Durst with the truth-to-the-bone singing of Roy Zimmerman, and you've got a night that flips and spins the political insanities in our midst. Joni Mitchell says, "Roy's lyrics move beyond poetry and achieve perfection." The LA Times gives a nod to his "lacerating wit." Take a look at Zimmerman's original song titles. You'll get an idea of what's up for the night: "Creation Science 101," "Defenders of Marriage," "Sing-Along Second Amendment." His progressive anthems receive equal time: "Hope, Struggle and Change," a populist call to action, and "I Approve This Message," an economic justice theme song for the Occupy Movement. Live from the Starving Ear with Will Durst & Roy Zimmerman is a presentation by SF Live Arts at Cyprian's Check it out on YouTube

Stations of the Cross in St. Cyprian's Sanctuary Lent 2012 Image above Station 1
With this cross are the portraits of nine 20th century martyrs, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Maura Clarke, Elizabeth Feodorovna, Ita Ford, Dorothy Kazel, Martin Luther King, Jr., Maximilian Kolbe, Janani Luwum, and Oscar Romero. The text in the background is, from bottom to top, the article from the U.S. Constitution permitting the death penalty, the Federal law about the death penalty, and the Anglican Church's statement about the death penalty. ABOUT THE ARTIST Nathaniel Lewis

Nat Lewis was born in 1970, and grew up in Davis, California. He has a B.A. in Environmental Studies from UC Santa Cruz, and is a self-taught sculptor, working with found objects. He has shown in Sacramento, San Francisco, and Oakland.
Nat began making crosses and crucifixes as a Lenten discipline in the early aughts. He feels that reusing something discarded by our society is an important action environmentally, and spiritually represents our chance at a new life through our faith. The Stations of the Cross, commissioned by All Souls Church in Berkeley in 2010, were an opportunity to broaden the scope of Nat's regular creations from a snapshot to a story. Nat teaches middle school mathematics on the Peninsula, where he also finds the time to share the art of bending wire with his students.

St. Cyprian's Lenten Series -
being made new
Wednesdays, February 29th - April 4th
6:30 p.m.-8 p.m.
Each week during Lent, share a meal, book, practices & prayers. Join us as we read together, Radical Welcome: Embracing God, The Other, and the Spirit of Transformation by The Reverend Stephanie Spellers. This book is a theological, inspirational, and practical guide for congregations that want to move beyond diversity and inclusion to present a vision for the church of the future: one where the transforming gifts, voices and power of marginalized cultures and groups bring new life to the mainline church.
Read more about the author the Reverend Stephanie Spellers and the faith community she leads "The Crossing" in Boston, by clicking here.
Our theme for the season, "being made new" comes from a prayer said during the Good Friday & Easter Vigil liturgies,
O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquillity the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
