Dear Friends, Neighbors, and Members of St. Cyprian's,

An hour ago St. Cyprian's Deacon Eric Metoyer and I walked back into the office after a walk around the neighborhood. The break took longer than we expected, because on the way to grab some lunch we witnessed dark clouds of smoke rising from the opposite side of Divisadero Street. After a phone call to Adrian Williams, whose children live in that area and being assured that no one was injuried, at Eric's encouragement we headed in the direction of the blaze.  We quickly noticed a crowd had gathered near Third Baptist Church on Pierce Street, just a block up from the fire. In the midst of the crowd we recognized The Reverend Amos Brown. As more and more fire trucks arrived on the scene, Reverend Brown gently shared some of the troubling history of California, and our city's current struggles for Civil Rights. Please join us in praying for those who lost their homes and the many who are bravely putting out the fire.

At Christmas, we celebrate Divine life coming to dwell with us humans, coming to stand with us in the crowd and in the midst of burning buildings literal and figurative--- the eternal logos, wisdom of God takes on human flesh. Christmas is not about a distant, aloof, diety standing above the fray but about God's deep dive into our messy, complicated and difficult lives. The incarnation is about God choosing to stand in solidarity with us human beings, standing with and for us in our very real world of suffering, pain, oppression, violence and poverty. Over the next few days we'll explore the distinctive stories about Jesus's birth --- as we do so let us be attentive to how they point us to a God that breaks down boundaries of insider and outsider, rich and poor, truth and fiction, powerful and weak. Inviting all of us to look at ourselves and the world around us differently.
