Dear Friends, Neighbors, and Members of St. Cyprian's,

Ever since I started working at St. Cyprian's I have been taking note of songs that speak to the tone and spirit of our work together. One song that keeps coming up is Bob Dylan's "All I really want to do." Which to me expresses well our desire to connect with our neighbors and with one another. Being church people that are actually interested in the lives of those around us, and folks that don't attend much or at all is a strange thing in this city, perhaps any place. But as an Archbishop once said, "the church is the only organization that exists for the benefit of non-members." Here are the lyrics for your consideration.

I ain't lookin' to compete with you
Beat or cheat or mistreat you
Simplify you, classify you
Deny, defy or crucify you
All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you.

No, and I ain't lookin' to fight with you
Frighten you or tighten you
Drag you down or drain you down
Chain you down or bring you down
All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you.

I ain't lookin' to block you up
Shock or knock or lock you up
Analyze you, categorize you
Finalize you or advertise you
All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you.

I don't want to straight-face you
Race or chase you, track or trace you
Or disgrace you or displace you
Or define you or confine you

All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you.

I don't want to meet your kin
Make you spin or do you in
Or select you or dissect you
Or inspect you or reject you
All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you.

I don't want to fake you out
Take or shake or forsake you out
I ain't lookin' for you to feel like me
See like me or be like me
All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you.

I invite you to consider your own St. Cyprian's play list. What song or songs communicate the heart of what you see happening in our life at St. Cyprian's? Perhaps in the weeks ahead we can feature them in this newsletter, send your song titles to [email protected]. We may even sing them in church.

See you soon at Turk & Lyon!

Peace,   Will

Eric Metoyer on the Feast of All Saints
An excerpt, full text here:

"While praying over the readings for All Saints Day the image which returned to my mind was the saints gathered in glory - the martyrs, workers, evangelists; children, women, men - strengthened in faith to do the hard work of following the way of Jesus. He asks us to live into an upside down word of ending the divisive existence and instead live as part of a community strengthened by mutual love for each other as well as love of God. In our world today we can easily be alone, isolated, in our home, on crowded #5 bus, in hospital or at work; alone in the crowd. To be followers of Jesus is to come together in common worship and mutual support. 'I am the vine and you are the branches...' (Jn 15:5) is our model, 'Love one another as I have loved you (Jn 15:12) our commandment. We are connected to each other. To follow in the way of Jesus, to live like Christ is the calling of the saints."

More from Eric on All Saints

Eric is now a Ordinand to the Transitional Deaconate, his ordination is on Saturday, December 3 at 2 p.m. at Grace Cathedral.
Congratulations to Eric, we'll be there with bells on.

"St. Cyprian's has been nominated for an Oscar, a Green Oscar!"

Cyprian's folks will join other finalists for the Green Oscars ceremony at Grace Cathedral next Tuesday.

California Interfaith Power & Light is recognizing congregations throughout the state for their green and sustainable projects this year. The community effort to go from Grey2Green with the sidewalks along St. Cyprian's and our Lenten Series focused on livability helped us get the nod from CIP&L. Plant Update

And how are the 100 plants doing since the planting in late July?  They're thriving and filling in the spaces. The shrubs along the Turk Street wall got their first pruning, the flowering plants aren't blooming as often but seem happy. We've lost just two grasses from what appears to be unwanted dog attention. And a fair amount of runoff has been diverted from the sewers to the aquifer.

2012 Pledge Campaign begins

On Sunday, Jarie Bolander, St. Cyprian's Junior Warden helped launch our 2012 Pledge Campaign with a moving reflection on why this community matters to him and his family. Read Jarie's reflection by clicking here

A few excerpts:

In times of great stress and uncertainty, seeking out comfort becomes a priority. We struggle to make sense of events that seem like someone else's problem. That's why it's important to show up and be there for people before, during and after life changing events. Building those relationships enhances our lives and makes it much easier to connect and stay connected."

"St. Cyprian's is rooted in faith but built on community. We don't want to provide for the community - we want to partner with it. If you share our vision of a better world, one community at a time, then help us by sharing your talents, your time or your treasure. Every little bit helps and every little bit makes us all stronger."

St. Cyprian's goal this year is to broaden participation among congregation members and our wider network of supporters in the neighborhood and online. Many give to St. Cyprian's financially but choose not to sign a pledge card. Signing a pledge card allows us to plan ahead and strengthens our confidence, allowing us to reach for our shared dreams as a community. Your gift will make a difference.  To request a pledge card electronically or if you have questions email [email protected]

Each week through December 18th (our 51st Anniversary on Turk & Lyon) we will share stories of why people are supporting St. Cyprian's with their time, talent and treasure.

Jack Stephen's on why he's participating...
"One of the main reasons for my participating in Occupy San Francisco is because I fully believe that when Christ told us to love our neighbor as ourselves that he truly meant it." More here

Building Update from Michael Helquist

Saturday night's downpour was the first real-weather test of the tower and wall repairs. The Building Committee is very pleased to relay the good news: no leaks. The planning, expert advice, good work by Everest Waterproofing & Restoration, and support from the community are paying a huge dividend. Thanks to all.

This week and next:
  • The tower and Lyon Street wall are being painted: We've got color!
  • Interior walls are being patched and re-painted
  • Window treatments near completion
  • Final stucco work will get underway next week
  • One level of the scaffolding will be removed to allow for final roofing repairs next week.

Waller is an "SF ex-pat" now living in Portland, Oregon. He has a rich history with San Francisco, having collaborated with Joe Goode Performance Group, performed in Marc Bamuthi Joseph's Left Coast Leaning East Festival at YBCA, and generally kicked around the Mission for seven years until he moved to Portland in 2005.Cyprian's is excited to welcome and host Holcombe Waller. He was looking for an alternative venue in San Francisco that is intimate with superior sound. We think we're a good match.

From the Cyprian's Kitchen...
Back in the early 1980s St. Cyprian's put together a cookbook of recipes from our church community. Each week we will share a recipe from the cookbook in this e-newsletter. The book of recipes was dedicated to Miller Johnson, a member of St. Cyprian's who was a Master Chef.

Martha Hulses's Cheese Balls

3/4 cup sharp cheese

3/4 mild cheese like velvet

10 oz. Philadelphia Cream Cheese

1/4 Bleu Cheese

Grind with 1 medium sized onion

Add and blend in 2 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce. Mold in oil bowl and chill. Roll in mixture of 1 cup walnuts and 1/2 cup dried parsley. Warp in aluminum foil and store in refrigerator.

EAT, SHARE, PRAY
Every Wednesday @ 6:30 p.m.

Each week, friends, neighbors and members of St. Cyprian's gather over a simple meal, share a conversation about topics that matter and close the evening with meditation & Night Prayer. All are welcome.

Seeking A Partner

St. Cyprian's is seeking a congregation or group to share our space.

Who we are/what we offer: A small but dynamic and diverse group that lives its tagline: faith, action, community. We come from many parts of the city to be here at the corner of Turk and Lyon and have made reintegrating this church into the neighborhood a priority in the past year. Our church was founded as a spiritual home for black Episcopalians in the 1870s and drew Afro-Caribbeans and West Indians in the early part of the 20th century. St. Cyprian's has a long and storied history that we are committed to remembering, and it has a future for which we are laying a new foundation.

What we are seeking: A congregation or group in need of weekly space for meeting or worship on a year-round basis. We are not looking to merge with another faith group at this time but would be open to joint activities in spiritual formation, neighborhood outreach, and our community-based programs.

What we've been doing: More than would seem possible with a small group. We have a full schedule of concerts in conjunction with SF Live Arts, community hall rentals, and faith programs. We also have regular space-use arrangements with several organizations, including the Bay Area Organizing Committee; the Village Project, an after-school program for underserved children; Al-Anon; Alcoholics Anonymous; and Simply Sandwiches, a group that makes sandwiches for clients of the AIDS Housing Alliance.

We are an open-minded, open-hearted congregation and seek a space-use partner with similar values.
