Dear St. Cyprian's Friends, Neighbors, and Members,
Last Sunday after church, a bunch of those gathered for prayer headed out into the neighborhood to participate in Sunday Streets, a car-free day in which people come out of their homes (or places of worship) to transform streets into fun and lively public gathering places. Participants rode their bikes or scooters and said hello to their neighbors. We set up our table across from NOPA Little Ones, a group in the neighborhood for parents with young kids, and invited anyone and everyone to participate in a community art project called "Roots and Branches of Peace."

Thanks to St. Cyprian's sustained neighborhood engagement, we weren't just greeting strangers on Sunday. We also reconnected with people who have been up to St. Cyprian's in the last year for a concert, community meeting, and/or helped with our greening project. Each hand on "Roots and Branches of Peace" is different, reflecting the diversity and creativity of the people whom we are called to serve and love. One of the last people to work on the project was Jamal, a young guy who couldn't seem to take his hands off the colorful fabric. Even while we we trying to pack up, he kept wanting to color. Jamal proclaimed his favorite shape to be a heart, and squeezed a few extra ones on the edge of the fabric. In a world so full of fear, pain and grief, Jamal knew there's always room for more love. Check out below the lyrics of one piece of music that came to mind today as I thought about our experience on Sunday. I think it gives expression to the hopeful energy that flowed mightily all over the Western Addition during Sunday Streets. Thanks to everyone who stopped by St. Cyprian's table and who made the day so much fun for everyone. Thank you to our next door neighbor, artist Pat Preble, who coordinated our offering. Bring many names, beautiful and good, celebrate, in parable and story, holiness in glory, living, loving God. Hail and hosanna! Bring many names!
Strong mother God, working night and day, planning all the wonders of creation, setting each equation, genius at play: Hail and hosanna, strong mother God!
Warm father God, hugging every child, feeling all the strains of human living, caring and forgiving till we're reconciled: Hail and hosanna, warm father God!
Old, aching God, grey with endless care, calmly piercing evil's new disguises, glad of good surprises, wiser than despair: Hail and hosanna, old aching God!
Young, growing God, eager, on the move, saying no to falsehood and unkindness, crying out for justice, giving all you have: Hail and hosanna, young, growing God!
Great, living God, never fully known, joyful darkness far beyond our seeing, closer yet than breathing, everlasting home: Hail and hosanna, great, living God!

St. Cyprian's Oral History Project:
The story of a community and a neighborhood
We all have stories to tell. Your stories and the stories of the people around you are unique and valuable treasures for your family, and for your community. These stories, these oral histories, open up new views of the past, by turning history inside out: history is not only to be found in dates and key events, but also in the memories of people who witnessed or lived through them.
The history of St. Cyprian's is a fascinating collection of stories of community and neighborhood: from its origins in the early 1870s, when a group of Black Episcopalians gathered together to form a new church; to the completion of the Panama Canal, when West Indian laborers from that project, born and raised in the Church of England, began migrating to California; to the completion of the building on the corner of Turk and Lyon Streets, marked by its first service in 1960; though the enormous changes of the 60's and 70s, and the decades that followed.
We'd like to know who you are, how you came to join St. Cyprian's, and what changes you have experienced and seen in the church, the neighborhood, and in San Francisco. How long have you been part of St. Cyprian? How many family generations are connected with St. Cyprian's? How many family members have attended St. Cyprian's (former and current)?
Through St. Cyprian's Oral History Project, our goal is to discover and preserve unwritten histories, large and small; to engage with the past through specific and personal experience, and by doing so, understand in a deeper and more resonant way, who we are.
On scheduled Sundays throughout the coming year, we invite you to share your stories with us, directly following the service. We will also reach out to elders in the community, through visits to their homes. We welcome your ideas, advice, support, and help.

One of our favorite singer/songwriters, Maurice Tani performs his smart, neo-noir, honky-tonk songs with Jenn Courtney and her luxurious, full-sized, strong, vulnerable, sexy, June Carter-like voice.

What's going on with that wall & tower repair?
Despite temporary setbacks and unforeseen challenges, the St.Cyprian's Building Committee has confirmed that by September 19th (we're waiting on windows to be delivered) work will begin on a major building issue that has plagued our church's life for many years. The leaky Lyon Street wall and bell tower roof will at last be repaired. St. Cyprian's congregants and friends have already committed to paying for over 1/2 the cost of this significant project with new funds and are working together to raise more. Thanks to the generosity and stewardship of generations of St. Cyprian's members and the commitment of our Bishop's Committee, we will begin our 89th year in San Francisco with one less worry and an inspiring symbol of our community's strength, vitality and resilience. If you would like to contribute to this effort send checks to:
St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church
Tower Society
2097 Turk Street (@Lyon)
San Francisco, California 94115
Many thanks to each member of the Building Committee (Michael Helquist, Bruno Peguese, Tommie Collie, Kevin Johnson, & Philip Gerrie) & Rob Crum whose expertise has been critical to this effort. Thank you to those who have contributed financially and to those who will. Every gift matters.
