Dear Friends, Neighbors, and Members of St. Cyprian's,
Last week as I waited for the 24 Divisadero (the bus I often take between St. Cyprian's neighborhood and Bernal Heights, where Matt and I currently live), I wrote an email to an old friend. We originally met in a cybercaf in New Delhi about 10 years ago, and had recently reconnected via the Internet.

In the email I wrote at the bus stop, I shared with my friend a little bit about our life at St. Cyprian's-- its gifts, blessings and struggles. My friend's response came a few days later from a hotel in Sweden. He was about to give a keynote address at an academic conference on, of all things, "temporal and spatial displacements in identity, and the (im)possibility to communicate these complex life experiences." I am no philosopher, but my hunch is that St. Cyprian's, as a community and as individuals, knows something about such matters.
My friend sent me a quote from Hegel that may have some wisdom for us at St. Cyprian's:
But the life of Spirit is not the life that shrinks from death and keeps itself untouched by devastation, but the life that endures it and maintains itself in it. It wins its truth only when, in utter dismemberment it finds itself. It is this power, not as something positive...on the contrary, Spirit is this power only by looking the negative in the face, and tarrying with it. (The Phenomenology of Spirit, p. 19, Hegel)
On Friday, members of St. Cyprian's, along with our sisters and brothers active in the Diocese of California's Afro Anglican Commission & the Union of Black Episcopalians, have been invited to meet with Father Michael Lapsley. Father Michael is the founder of "The Institute for the Healing of Memories." His personal story & life's witness speak to power of perseverance, honesty and reaching out to others--even those who may be dramatically different from ourselves. For more information on tomorrow's gathering, please contact Eric Metoyer: eric_metoyer@mac.com
See you soon at Turk & Lyon.
Peace,
Will
