Dear friends, neighbors, and members of St. Cyprian's,

The joy was palpable on Easter morning, as long time congregants some who had not been to church in years and new people who had never been inside our building before celebrated together the joy of God's death-defying love. The morning was full of surprises, so many more people showed up than expected that we ran out of leaflets, the beautiful flowers at the altar were put together by one generous neighbor and the music was led by a talented globe trotting musician who lives on the other side of the panhandle. The reflections following the sermon one from a 30+ year congregant, the other from a member who joined us last year --- each gave expression in different ways to the gift that St. Cyprian's is as a community continually inviting the practice of resurrection. Following the service, we gathered around a giant table downstairs for a festive potluck brunch --- many thanks to everyone who contributed and especially to Norma Planiczka for coordinating our hospitality. Throughout the gospel accounts of the resurrection Jesus shows up when communities of his followers gathered together and shared the practice of hospitality. Sometimes Jesus is the strange guest (on the road to Emmaus), sometimes the cook (making breakfast on the beach), sometimes walking through walls and locked doors of fear and doubt. As we committed to do on Sunday, let us strive to be like Mary Magdalene persistent and insistent on finding Jesus, but vulnerable, flexible, and curious enough to notice our teacher in disguise.

I am so grateful to be practicing resurrection with you at St. Cyprian's. The coming weeks are full of opportunities for us to extend hospitality, practice resurrection and be surprised how Jesus shows up. On Sunday, our Junior Warden Jarie Bolander will reflect on the gospel in which Thomas asks some important questions. Jarie will share how his work as a scientist, engineer and entrepreneur connects with this powerful story. Once a month throughout the spring and summer a different voice from the congregation will be invited to preach, we began this practice on Palm Sunday with Adrian Williams, executive director of the Village Project. Soon, our hope is to have the capacity to record and post online sermons, lectures, stories and other material.

Men of Endurance and Fret Not

Rural mountain gospel meets urban soul music gospel. With four powerful voices (lead by Pastor Kenny Mason) and backed by a dynamic rhythm section, Men of Endurance captures the blues and soul sound that influenced artists such as Little Milton, Wilson Pickett, James Brown, Jackie Wilson and many others. Performing at blues festivals, as well as gospel festivals, all over the west, they received the 2004 Gospel Singing Award from the Bay Area Blues Society. Lead by Lori Arthur's intense and fiery singing, Fret Not plays old-time, boot-stomping roots gospel with songs from the traditions of America's white and black rural churches; backed by fiddle, bass, guitar and banjo.
