New Year Projections
Reports from many of our clients suggest that tonnages are increasing slowly as the economy creeps out of the Great Recession. We have seen a number of solid waste industry specific articles detailing projections for 2012. A sampling of these include the following major projections by several industry observers:
- Waste volumes are projected to be lagging behind the old rule of thumb of 1/2 to 2/3 of Gross National Product.
- Pricing of new waste collection agreements are anticipated to be in the range of 1 to 1.5% at the low end and 2.5 to 3% at the high end. This is slightly lower despite the fact that the CPI has trended up to 3% at the end of 2011.
- Residential pricing appears to be very competitive with major haulers shifting their emphasis on protecting their account with high volumes.
- Recycled commodity prices appear to stabilize but are projected to be below that of 2011.
- Flow control will continue to be a major issue for many local solid waste agencies as they continue to try to 'patch" holes in their budgets.

County Looks to the Sun |
A Florida County commissioned SCS Engineers to conduct a feasibility study for installing solar panels on their two landfills. We concluded it was feasible to install a 150 kilowatt (kW) system on a portion of the landfill in conjunction with an exposed geomembrane cap (EGC) for about the same cost as installing a conventional soil and grass cap without solar. We recently published an article in Waste Advantage Magazine which lays out the pros and cons of such solar capping systems. Click here to view article. |

SCS Completes Citizens Hand Unload Facility
The Citizens Hand Unload Facility recently went online in Pinellas County. The hand unload area is a location where the public can unload solid waste from smaller vehicles, avoiding the larger trucks at the
landfill and on the WTE facility's tipping floor. The unloading area is designed to make it easier and safer for customers to drop off their wastes.
