College Engineering Internship

Greetings!

DFW STEC ended its planning year with some notable changes we would like to share. The Dallas Fort Worth Semiconductor and Technology Executive Council has changed its name to the Dallas Fort Worth Technology and Education Council (DFW TEC) in order to increase marketability to the many technology companies in the area and to emphasize the organization's commitment to education in DFW.

Along with this name change comes an updated Mission and Vision that clearly defines the purpose and goals the organization has set to achieve. The web site is currently in transition. It has changed from www.destinationdigital.org to www.dfwtec.org. Visitors who type in the former or have it saved in their favorites will still be transported to the new site. Further site updates will go into affect soon.

DFW TEC enjoyed the holiday break and now we are back to work and energized to prepare opportunities this spring for classroom and career day speakers, industry information opportunities for class trips and other groups interested in learning more about local industries and the importance of technology in our community today.

Read further for updates to DFW TEC programs and opportunities.

DFW TEC wishes everyone a happy and prosperous new year!

Manager, Community Relations

Time Warner Cable

Ms. Yakunin manages community relations efforts for North Texas which includes Dallas, El Paso, Wichita Falls and the Golden Triangle. She is responsible for the company's Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) initiative, the development of community partnerships, board stewardship and employee volunteerism.

Ms. Yakunin introduced Connect a Million Minds to the Dallas community in March, 2010. CAMM is a 5-year, $100 million cash and in-kind commitment to inspire students to pursue education and careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

"Time Warner Cable is committed to utilizing our resources and raising the awareness of the importance of education, particularly in STEM - an area of study in which our country is lagging," she said. "Through our support of DFW-TEC, we are able to further promote STEM learning among students and educators."

In addition, Ms. Yakunin is accountable for identifying community partners who are a strategic fit for the CAMM initiative and other community relations goals. She is responsible for developing and executing strategic partnerships which are aligned with the company's overall business goals.

"We've been fortunate to develop mutually beneficial partnerships with organizations including Girls Inc., the Salesmanship Club of Dallas and the Museum of Nature & Science among a number of others. These organizations share our vision of educating students on the importance of studying science, technology, engineering and math."

Time Warner Cable is committed to providing students with the tools they need to be successful in the future.  "We are pleased to be a partner of the DFW-TEC organization and look forward to working together to improve and grow STEM education in North Texas."

Connect a Million Minds is a five-year, $100 million philanthropic initiative to address America's declining proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math, which puts our children at risk of not competing successfully in a global economy. Using its media assets, TWC creates awareness of the issue and inspires students to develop the STEM skills they need to become the problem solvers of tomorrow. Program highlights include: original PSAs that challenge public perceptions of STEM; a unique website, www.connectamillionminds.com, where parents and community members can pledge to connect young people with the wonders of science; "The Connectory", a one-of-a-kind online resource that makes it simple and easy for parents and students to find informal science and technology learning opportunities in their communities; grants to support non-profit organizations that bring stimulating, high-quality and affordable after-school STEM learning to students; TWC employees, over 47,000 strong, who volunteer their time at community events like science fairs and robotics competitions, and share their passion for engineering and technology with students at CAMM career days. TWC's national CAMM partners are CSAS (Coalition for Science After School) and FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology).

Ms. Yakunin has been in the telecommunications industry for the last eight years. Prior to joining Time Warner Cable, she held multiple positions with privately-held, Cox Communications.

IndustryInfoSeriesIndustry Information Series

Three new dates and locations for the Spring Industry Information Series will be posted at the beginning of the Spring semester.

The Industry Information Series held this Fall were hosted by Raytheon's Dallas location, Cisco Systems Inc. and the University of Texas at Arlington. Industry Information Series are always of great interest to groups and fill to capacity quickly.

Industry Information Series events provide great introductions to industry careers by providing attendees a first-hand look and sometimes hands-on experiences. The events are kicked off with a light lunch and a welcome from the site host. Participants receive an introduction to the high tech industry and high-demand careers in science, technology, engineering and math and gain further understanding by participating in a site tour.  Participants are even eligible to win door prizes.

If you have a group that would like to take advantage of one of these events, please visit the web site to fill out and submit an application to attend one of these three opportunities offered this Fall. Register now, as seats are limited.

Check back at the Destination Digital website for details and to sign up.

EEIExecutive Educator Internship Application Available Now

It is never too early to start planning how to spend the summer vacation. If you find yourself in town June 6-17 and you are a high school Advanced Placement math or science teacher, you may consider applying to participate in the ninth annual Executive Educator Internship. The application is available here on the DFW TEC web site. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, March 30, 2011.

The Executive Educator Internship is held for two weeks in June for high school Advanced Placement math and science educators. During these two weeks educators gain insight into the professional careers of local engineers and high tech scientists, tour local high tech facilities and learn how to best share these real world experiences with their classrooms. In this way, educators can better explain what current jobs in technology look like today to their students

Upon completion of this program, educators leave charged for the coming year with new insight and ideas for new and engaging lesson plans. In addition, educators are awarded $1,000 for completion of the internship as well as a final project they create that incorporates the most challenging concept that they teach, displaying its real world applications. To do this, the project requires educators to create brief videos that are later posted on the DFW STEC web site as well as TeacherTube.com, available to other educators across cyberspace.

The internship is richly educational and interactive. If you or someone you know may be interested in the Executive Educator Internship opportunity, register today! Space is limited. If you were a previous participant and would like to submit encouraging details about your own experience please email them to Erin Hagan at ehagan@dfwtec.org so we may put them on the web site!
