AHRC Announcements

EVOLVE Countdown! 344 Days
AHRC's RIC: Going Live August 1st!
Beginning on August 1, 2011, AHRC will launch the , which will centralize the referral process for all AHRC programs. The RIC will be the starting point of contact for individuals (individuals new to AHRC or already enrolled and seeking additional services) interested in AHRC programs. RIC staff will collect the basic information required to complete a program application. Once an application is complete, the RIC will refer the individual to their program(s) of interest so that an intake assessment can be conducted by program staff.
- The RIC will provide families, professionals, and AHRC staff with:
- One resource for information on AHRC services and supports
- One contact number for all referrals
- Simplified application process: basic information (ex: demographics, service needs, evaluations) will only be asked for and shared between appropriate departments
- Ensure data integrity: making sure that individuals are only entered into the Evolve database once with all relevant information stored in one record that will be available to all appropriate program staff
- Expert knowledge of services available throughout AHRC, not only those one department may be knowledgeable about
Go to the "Evolve Project" tab on our intranet site (http://home.ahrcnyc.org/) and click on the document "POSTED 07.05.2011.RIC Introduction". Questions or concerns? Email evolveTalk@ahrcnyc.org

AHRC's Camp Anne Trains 70 Employees in CPR and First Aid!
AHRC's Camp Anne recently trained 70 AHRC staff in CPR and first aid. With dedication and the help of AHRC's Organizational & Employee Development Department and Camp Anne employees, each staff member is now an AHA CPR instructor!
"The importance of CPR training is something we value here at AHRC as it just enhances what we do here overall and shows how much we care about the people in our caring community.
Also, the skills learned in this training can be applied to anyone, co-workers and family members included, and in the event when you can be a Good Samaritan out in the community....," said Daisy Santiago, Staff Trainer, AHRC's OED Department.
Thanks to Vivian Hayardeny, Knowledge Systems Manager for AHRC's OED Department, for assembling the team of instructors and to their departments, which all supported the day of training. Two representatives from the American Heart Association assisted in training the new instructors that day.
According to Daisy, each AHRC staff member who's been CPR certified is entrusted by parents and caregivers of those individuals, and the individuals themselves who attend camp to provide the best care and support. Students in AHRC CPR classes are taught that emergencies can happen anywhere, anytime, to anyone!
"To be able to have the knowledge, skills, and tools to respond to emergencies and save lives is empowering to our staff that support the individuals at AHRC in every one of our programs." |
OED Department Updates
Policy on Equal Employment Opportunities Equal Employment Opportunity, anti-discrimination and Affirmative Action are a matter of policy at AHRC NYC, and we view the principles of Equal Employment Opportunity, anti-discrimination and Affirmative Action as hallmarks to our success as an agency, as well as important elements of our employment process. At AHRC NYC, we expect the principle of Equal Employment Opportunity to be understood and practiced in every aspect of our business. Prescribed affirmative actions are applied to bring qualified women, people of color/minorities, veterans and individuals with disabilities into the hiring and promotional processes of each agency department. Only valid job requirements are imposed. It is our primary objective to establish a balanced workforce - one reflecting and representative of the communities in which we operate. This policy on Equal Employment Opportunity extends to all employees and applicants for employment, regardless of sex, race, creed, gender, age, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, citizenship status, marital status, sexual orientation, pregnancy, disability, medical condition, genetic information, whether a person is a victim of domestic abuse or veteran status. Harassment, intimidation, threats, coercion, or discrimination against employees or applicants for employment based upon the above characteristics are considered a violation of AHRC NYC's policy on equal opportunity, as well as any form of retaliation against employees or applicants who file discrimination complaints or assist/participate in complaint investigations, compliance reviews, or hearings or who oppose any act made unlawful by Equal Employment Opportunity, anti-discrimination or Affirmative Action regulations. Violations of this policy will be addressed in accordance with AHRC NYC's grievance procedures. The agency's EEO Coordinator is Esta Stein, Associate Director, Human Resources Administration. She manages the Affirmative Action Program and monitors compliance with applicable regulations. Questions or issues regarding this Policy or the agency's Affirmative Action Program should be directed to the EEO Coordinator. Invitation to Self Identify AHRC NYC is a government contractor subject to Section 4212 of the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974 and Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which requires government contractors to take Affirmative Action to employ and advance in employment qualified disabled veterans of the Vietnam era and individuals with disabilities. If you are a disabled veteran covered by this program, or if you are a person with a disability and would like to be considered under the Affirmative Action programs, please tell us. Submission of this information is voluntary and refusal to provide it will not subject you to discharge or disciplinary treatment. Information obtained concerning individuals shall be kept confidential, except that (1) supervisors and managers may be informed regarding restrictions in the work or duties of disabled veterans and individuals with disabilities and regarding reasonable accommodations, and (2) first aid and safety personnel may be informed, when and to the extent appropriate, if the individual's condition might require emergency treatment and (3) government officials investigating compliance with the Acts shall be informed. If you are an individual with a disability, we would like to include you under our Affirmative Action Program. It would assist us if you tell us about (1) any special methods, skills, and procedures which would assist you in qualifying for any position for which you wish to be considered, and (2) the accommodations which we could make which would enable you to perform the job properly and safely, including special equipment, changes in the physical layout of the job, elimination of certain duties relating to the job, or other accommodations. Anyone having questions about this Affirmative Action Program may contact the EEO Coordinator, Esta Stein, Associate Director, Human Resources Administration during normal business hours, Monday through Friday. Congratulations to the Following Staff on their July 2011 Milestones!

Augusts' Brain Injury/Concussion Awareness Day at Citi Field!
This August AHRC New York City's Camping and Recreational Services, Bush Terminal Adult Day Center, and Bronx and Brooklyn Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) programs teamed up with The Brain Injury Association of New York State (BIANYS) to support Brain Injury/Concussion Awareness Day at Citi Field.
Several individuals with developmental disabilities from each AHRC New York City program attended and enjoyed the Mets vs. Phillies game, which ended 8-4/Phillies.
This year's Brain Injury/Concussion Awareness Day was a great success. It is our hope that AHRC NYC and the Brain Injury Association of New York State will team up again in the future!
If you would like more information on how individuals can participate in these events please email Miriam.Figueroa@ahrcnyc.org at AHRC NYC Recreational Services. For more information on Brain Injury and Concussion please visit www.bianys.org.
AHRC in the News! Why Businesses Should Hire Employees with Developmental Disabilities
By Jonathan Deutsch, Ph.D., associate professor of culinary arts at Kingsborough Community College, CUNY and public health at the CUNY Graduate Center.
"...I'm all for feeling good, but you have a business to run. The good news is that there is a lot of research [1] suggesting that employees with disabilities have lower turnover, more loyalty, and less absenteeism than typical employees. The challenge is to be thoughtful about how your operation is structured and how to match job tasks to abilities."
