Wisdom from Another...

We Just Don't Know

When we think that something is going to bring us pleasure, we don't know what's really going to happen.

When we think something is going to give us misery, we don't know.

Letting there be room for not knowing is the most important thing of all.

We try to do what we think is going to help.

But we don't know.

We never know if we're going to fall flat or sit up tall.

When there's a big disappointment, we don't know if that's the end of the story.

It may be just the beginning of a great adventure.

Life is like that.

We don't know anything.

We call something bad; we call it good.

But really we just don't know.

AHRC to Launch Its Referral and Information Center or "RIC"

As announced, AHRC is implementing a new computer system to becalled Evolve, which will maintain one complete electronic record for each individual that we serve.  To learn more about this project, please review the communication posted on the "Evolve Project" tab of our intranet site (http://home.ahrcnyc.org/).  We will guide everyone through the changes that are expected throughout the system's development.  We are very excited to announce the first change in the way we do business now!

Beginning August 1, 2011, instead of referrals to AHRC being handled directly through individual departments or through what has been called the Central Referral/Intake unit; we will be centralizing this process and launching AHRC's Referral and Information Center (RIC).  This will simplify how we introduce individuals to all of our programs and will offer one resource for information to families and professionals.

RIC staff will be the starting point of contact for individuals interested in AHRC programs. When families or professionals reach out directly to programs of departments, they will be welcomed to AHRC and then transferred to the RIC for the initial referral and information processing.

Based on an individual's needs and interests, RIC staff will introduce families and professionals referring individuals tothe full array of services that AHRC has to offer to new individuals, as well as to those already being served and desirous of additional services.

Up until now, individuals could enter our service system or make a referral through a specific department or through the Central Intake unit.  Now, individuals being referred for services will call the RIC or be transferred to the RIC to begin the referral and information process.   This change will provide families, professionals and AHRC staff with:
  •  One resource for information on AHRC services and supports
  •  One contact number for all referrals (to be distributed in July)
  •  Simplified application process: basic information (ex: demographics, service needs, evaluations) will only be asked for once and shared between appropriate departments
  • Ensure data integrity: making sure  that individuals are only entered into the Evolve database once with all relevant stored in one record that will be available to all appropriate  program staff
  • Expert knowledge of services available throughout AHRC, not only those one department may be knowledgeable about

While the RIC will begin to operate in August of 2011 using standard paper processes, the Evolve system will eventually allow for electronic management - data entry and tracking - of all AHRC program referrals.

The RIC will be meeting with each department over the next two weeks to plan how this process will be best implemented in that specific department.

Prior to August 1st, we will provide you with contact names, phone numbers, and other details you will need to better assist families.  Beginning in August when an individual  interested in obtaining services calls you directly - new individuals to AHRC as well as those already being served who are interested in obtaining additional services -you will assist him or her in contacting the RIC.

We will continue to keep you informed of changes throughout the development of our new Evolve system.  More to be announced as we move forward!

  • In Memory of Susan Regan

By Julia Hunt, Assistant Director, AHRC Residential Services

Susan Regan

Susan Regan sadly passed away on June 26, 2011.  Susie lived and worked with AHRC for many years.  She first moved into the Fordham Apartments in 1989 where she lived independently with little support from staff.  During this time Susan also worked full time as an Administrative Assistant for the Residential Department.  She loved visiting museums and art shows and spent a lot of her free time painting, sculpting and writing.  She even wrote a science fiction book!  Susan was very talented and artistic!

In 2005, Susan required more assistance due to health concerns. She moved to the Fairfield Apartments but continued to work and travel independently until 2008.  Despite having dialysis three times a week which limited her abilities to participate in many things, Susan always maintained a positive attitude.  She continued to create her artwork, write, and initiate many of her own activities within the apartment to fill her days.

Susan understood her limits but did not accept them and continuously astounded staff on a regular basis.  She will be greatly missed by her peers, residential staff and her colleagues at AHRC. Rest in peace Susan.
