Fun Facts!

Getting ready to fire up the grill?

During the war of 1812, meatpacker Sam Wilson of Troy, NY, stamped "U.S. Beef" on the products he sent to the troops. This was popularly interpreted as-and began the legend of-Uncle Sam, although the letters actually stood for "urine soaked."

Final Thoughts...

AHRC Announcements

AHRC is about to EVOLVE: NEW INDIVIDUAL SERVED DATABASE IN DEVELOPMENT

As announced in two recent issues of Facts Friday, AHRC is working on a new computer program that will maintain one electronic record of each individual that we serve.

 Currently, AHRC departments track our individuals' information using a number of systems, such as: CMHC, AREV, Crescent, Billing Blocks, and hand written files.  All of these systems will be replaced by EVOLVE, a program that maintains one complete electronic file, giving you access to all of the information you need to do your job better.  Information includes:

Demographics (the individual's address, age, gender, and other basic information);

  • Family/Guardian/emergency and other important contacts;
  • Evaluations, assessments and required reports;
  • Consents and authorizations;
  • ISPs (Individual Service Plans) and addendums;
  • Case Notes;
  • Clinical Data;
  • Incidents;
  • Medication administration records;
  • Client funds documentation and management; and
  • Claims and billing records.

Finally, everyone will have important information about the individuals we serve that often gets lost between departments.  Using one system to manage all of this information will allow us to:

  • be fully informed when serving individuals and families;
  • have access to reports and evaluations when we need them;
  • meet compliance requirements;
  • ease billing processes; and
  • reduce errors that occur by using multiple systems among many departments.

This is an enormous project that is expected to be rolled out next summer, 2012.  We have full intentions of keeping you informed throughout the process.  Communications regarding the project will be posted on our intranet site and a dedicated email address will be available to you by early summer- we hope that you will help us by forwarding questions, suggestions, and lessons learned to our attention.

Stay tuned for updates.

Celebrating Inclusionary Education in New York City!

To commemorate inclusionary education in New York City schools, Christopher Treiber, Director of AHRC's Educational Advocacy Department, co-chaired the second NYC's Department of Education's (DOE) Division of Students with Disabilities and English Language Learners and Parents for Inclusive Education's (PIE) "Celebration of Inclusion."

Held on May 26th in Mason Hall of Baruch College, Chris, who has co-coordinated Parents for Inclusive Education for nearly12 years, along with Jaclyn Olkin Barney, asked students from over 70 New York City schools the question, "how does inclusion make school great?"

There were no guidelines-students could answer in any way they chose. Submissions included mosaics, artwork, poems, etc. Choirs including students with and without disabilities performed for an audience of over 400 people! Participating students, DOE staff, teachers, family members, AHRC Associate Executive Director, Judy DeIasi, and elected officials including Matthew Sapolin, Commissioner for the Mayor's Office for People with Developmental Disabilities enjoyed the celebration. Dennis Walcott, DOE Chancellor, also attended.

"Congratulations on a wonderful celebration. Chris-thanks for your hard and committed work for the families and children in our city schools," said Laura Kennedy, AHRC Board Member. "A great day for inclusion in NYC!"

AHRC offers educational advocacy services to individuals of school age with developmental disabilities who are experiencing difficulty accessing services or have problems with the services being provided. Every year, Chris, along with his staff, assists over 200 students, and train nearly 500 parents and professionals. With the advocates help, individuals with developmental disabilities lives are changed-they are given the educational opportunities that they deserve.

The Educational Advocate will provide assistance with reviewing evaluations, securing additional evaluations, developing strategies to utilize when accessing needed services, explaining rights and negotiating systems.  The Advocacy Office conducts trainings for parents and professionals.  Where necessary, the Advocate will also attend CPSE & CSE meetings and Impartial Hearings with city and state agencies.  Although the primary focus of the Advocate is education, assistance with accessing other needed services available through city, state, and federal agencies is also provided.

Do you know a family/individual with developmental disabilities that could use our assistance? Email Christopher.Treiber@ahrcnyc.org or contact the AHRC Advocacy Services Hotline at 212.780.2799.
