Dear Jackpott Members, Happy Summer! It's the beginning of June and I can't believe my 4 year olds are out of school already - although I'm happy to not have the morning carpool at 7:40 in the morning! I hope you all have a safe and happy summer. Please watch your children carefully around water - this remains the number one cause of death among children in Florida. We have so much going on this month: Zone captain breakfast on June 5th - this will help train new zone captains. These folks are the heart of Jackpott in their communities and their role is so important in helping our members feel a personal connection to our club. CPR trainings - this is something we've done every few years with great success. I know I was happy to be re-trained in CPR after over 20 years - much changes in the CPR recommendations over time. June meeting featuring Fran Pitre, author and mother of three sets of twins. I've also received great response from military and single parents and am very excited to set up a meeting in the next month to get started on this initiative. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to help. Finally, things are really going with our membership to NOMOTC (National Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs). I am passing along information when I receive it and will resend the website id and password via a yahoo group mailing. Watch the yahoo group for the monthly NOMOTC newsletter, it includes a flyer for a discount on Twins Magazine. Also, by coincidence my in-laws live in Toledo,OH, the location of the NOMOTC convention. So, I will attend a day or two of convention representing Jackpott. I'll be sure to pass along any new learning and information. In the meantime, there is a wealth of information on the website, www.nomotc.org so please spend some time looking through it when you get a chance. Have a great summer! Summertime School Hints
Did you know most teachers expect their students to lose up to three or four months of learning over the summer break? How can parents prevent our kids from losing what they worked so hard to learn?
Here are some tips from our second VP, Kelly Emilio, an elementary school teacher now on leave with her twins, James & Charles:
- Use the Sunday Ads to help your child practice +, -, and money skills. Have them pick out a few things they would like to buy and ask them to figure out how much those items would cost together. Then ask them to count how much money they already have saved up. This is a great way to teach them how to start saving and ...how to calculate how much they need save. If they are old enough teach them how to calculate taxes.
- Have your children write or type letters to their friends and family. This will help them keep up their spelling and writing skills.
- Remember food can be an awesome way to teach fractions. While eating pizza or pie you can teach fractions. You can also teach fraction by having your child help you cook by measuring out amounts of ingredients (3/4 cup of milk).
- Show your child how to spell a sight word that is age appropriate for them. Then ask them to high light it with a highlighter every time they see the word on the front page of the newspaper.

Mom's Book Reviews
Confessions of a Slacker Mom
by Muffy Mead-Ferro
reviewed by Joan Romano
I have to admit I do love this title! I pretty much consider myself the epitome of the slacker mom, so I thought this book was written for me. Mead-Ferro describes her book as not "just one more installment in those endless parenting archives." She encourages parents to avoid the pressures of caving in to popular advice, and to refuse to purchase every new contraption and toy that appears on the market. As Jackpott Moms often discuss at meetings, the entire world feels the need to give each of us parenting advice. The grocery store seems to shine a beacon on moms of multiples and the world responds with ignorant comments and unwanted advice. I began this book with the expectation that the author was going to have a royal romp at the expense of all those pundits.
About half way through, I hadn't found much terribly amusing, and I had the feeling that instead of mocking the "super-mom next door", this author was one-upping her and describing how much more super she was. She was a pundit, just like those annoying know-it-alls. She just didn't believe in all the bells and whistles.
Mead-Ferro grew up on a cattle ranch in Wyoming. Like most of our parents and grandparents have continually told us, Muffy's family didn't have all the extra nonsense kids nowadays believe they need. She takes great pride in a "make-do" attitude. She doesn't baby her own offspring, for sure, instead bolstering them with a rub-dirt-on-it-and-shake-it-off attitude. I am pretty flexible about germs, pet hair, and things like crumbs, but this woman makes it sounds that if you clean you are making a pact with the devil! She also seems determined to lose or injure her kids somewhere - she mocks a plumber who recommends lowering the water temperature. She equates high achieving readers to unathletic dorks. I don't know, I am kind of hoping my kids can read and run, and that I don't mind a lower temperature because scalding my kids never seemed like a great idea. And when the author derides mommies who hold very tightly to their children's hands in public, I am guessing she doesn't read the newspapers about all of the pedophiles in Florida.
So, I liked the first chapter, but kind of went downhill from there. I admire that she wants kids to be sensible and practical, but one doesn't have to live like a cowhand from Wyoming to possess common sense. And in true slacker mom fashion, I didn't even read the last chapter. |
