Did you know that September is National Preparedness Month? |
As we commemorate the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and are about to observe another anniversary of 9/11, we're reminded of the importance of creating a disaster plan. And while it's essential that we prepare for large-scale disaster, It's easy to forget about the less disastrous disasters that can crop up.
Taking some simple precautions NOW can make a big difference in ensuring your safety, well-being and peace of mind.

COMPUTER: If backing up your folders is one of those good ideas you never get around to, Carbonite is for you. Carbonite backs up your computer automatically by providing an online service that ensures all the data on your hard drive is copied and safely stored on their servers. After the easy installation, you don't have to do a thing! In the event of a hard drive failure, theft, or fire, Carbonite users can instantly access and recover any lost data.
According to Carbonite, each year 43% of computer users will lose data stored on their computers. Hard drive failures are the most likely culprit, but theft is also a concern (especially for laptops), as well as catastrophic events such as fires, floods and accidental deletion of data. www.carbonite.com At $54.95 a year, can you afford NOT to have off-site computer backup?
BED BUGS.... EEEEEYEW: The best way to solve a bed bug problem is by preventing it. The best defense is a good offense!
1) Encase your mattress, box spring and pillow with certified
2) Know the signs of bed bugs (EARLY DETECTION WILL
SAVE YOU THOUSANDS OF DOLLAR$.)
3) Travel with caution - Travel is the #1 way of picking up
these hitchhikers.
4) DON'T DENY the signs or symptoms of bed bugs. Take
action immediately.
When returning home from a trip, place all clothing from luggage in garbage bags, and wash before reusing. The luggage should be treated with steri fab on the inside and out and then placed in a garbage bag until needed for the next trip. If you suspect a problem, I recommend Pest Away Exterminators here in NYC. They sell bedding protectors,
luggaqge encasements, and repellent spray......and did I mention they successfully treated a former U.S. President's bed bug problem?
Many injuries are preventable! (Home injuries are the 5th leading cause of death in the U.S.) Start by hazard-proofing your home. Throw out that wobbly old stepladder; remove any obstacle that one might trip over; enroll the whole family in CPR courses sponsored by the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association. Keep a first-aid kit handy at home and on vacation, and replace its contents as they are used or expire. Keep up-to-date medical records for everyone in the family, and ask your doctor about MedicAlert identification tags for family members with medical conditions.
Have a happy Labor Day weekend, Dear Readers, and be well, BE SAFE, be organized!
