PLANNING A GET-AWAY??????? |
|
Lighten up and carry on (your carry-on) |
Some travelers jam two weeks worth of gear in their bags for a long weekend (me!), while others pack too lightly and forget important things (my husband). Savvy travelers strike the perfect balance and bring just what they need. The maximum size carry-on bag that most airlines allow is 45 linear inches (the total height, width and depth of the bag), and you'd be amazed at how much a bag that size can hold. (Would you believe enough clothes for a 5-day conference, if you pack smart?)
So here I am, preparing to go on a glorious vacation to Maine for one whole week, and I am going to be a savvy traveler this time - the kind people stare at in wonderment at the airport, thinking "how did she pack all her stuff in that tiny little carry-on?"
1) Start by making a list - AND HERE'S THE KEY.....Don't wait until the last minute. (There are inevitable pre-vacation errands, like picking up dry-cleaning, getting prescriptions refilled, going to the bank.) Click on personal packing list to create your own personal list, and AVOID THAT NAGGINING FEELING THAT YOU'VE FORGOTTEN SOMETHING!! Make sure to bookmark the site for future trips!
DON'T BRING: Items which the hotel (or your host) have on hand (shampoo, hair dryer, bathrobe). Call ahead and ask if these things will be provided for you.
Your entire beauty regimen. Bring only the basics (face wash, moisturizer, sunblock and makeup.) Forget the mousses, gels, masks, toners, scrubs, loofas, balms, exfollients, etc.
ALWAYS BRING: Safety Pins
Band Aides - Neosporin (Neo-to-go)
Umbrella
Chargers for electronics
Medications
Plastic bags (for laundry, wet suits)
Passport or driver's license
Reading glasses (if applicable)
Snacks (nuts, protein bar)
Computer Passwords to access
your email from a remote computer.
Important telephone numbers, HAND-WRITTEN, and kept in your wallet in case of poor (or no) cell phone reception......or worse - a LOST cell phone! St--f happens
Packing List- The same packing list you used to pack for your trip is your checklist to make sure you've packed everything up for the return trip home.
2) Be realistic about what you need to bring with you
and try to avoid "just-in-case" thinking. Nowadays, a simple black dress or basic black pieces can go anywhere; dress them up or dress them down...... kahkis and a jacket for guys. As a rule of thumb, I limit the number of shoes I bring on any given trip to three pairs - walking (which could be boots), evening, and athletic. Bring clothes that do double-duty, and bring light layering pieces rather than big, bulky pieces (unless of course you're traveling to frigid climate). Sweater sets are a great stand-in for a blazer, ladies, and wrinkle-resistant shirts are truly miraculous.
3) Lay out clothes by outfits on a sofa - shirts,tops and/or
jacket over the back of the sofa, pants or skirt under each respective top, and shoes on the floor below. Plan for each day and evening you'll be away. That way you can see each outfit, as well as how the pants from outfit A coordinate with the jacket from outfit B. Stay within a color-palate (i.e. blacks/grays OR beige, brown, khaki) so that all pieces work with each another. Remember to include accessories for your outfits (belt, hose, evening bag, pashmina, cumberbund)

So now all you need is a great suitcase and a spirit of adventure................. |
To read a review of the top ten carry-on bags, click top-10 carry-ons.

My personal favorite is the Ramowa. Its' four wheels glide as if on ice, and it can easily be rolled along-side or in front of you. Pricey, yes, but the Rolls-Royce of luggage and stylish looking, too!
Arrive on vacation without an aching back from schlepping a heavy suitcase.
And finally, The Ready Brush, pre-pasted, pre-wrapped, disposable toothbrush.........one of my top travel
picks! Great for air travel, where the lavatory is barely big enough for - say - a tiny tube of toothpaste! To buy: Ready Brush (144 individually wrapped brushes/$48.80). Also available at Walgreens, $4.99 for a pack of 7.
Voila! So these are my travel tips and picks! Happy summer, and happy trails to you! xxx's,
Nancy |
