Summer Best resigns from AHP Board; Tracy Gantz appointed as Interim Executive Committee Member

Summer Best, who served as the 2012-2013 First Vice President representing the Florida Horse Park, tendered her resignation from the board in September. Summer has resigned from her position at The Florida Horse Park and plans to further her education. As she will no longer be employed by an AHP member, her position on the AHP Board created a vacancy.

The Bylaws state in the case of any vacancy in the Board of Directors, the President, with the advice and consent of the Executive Committee, shall appoint a qualified successor to serve until the next general election of Directors at an annual meeting of members.

AHP President Patty Tiberg has accepted the resignation of Summer Best and with the consent of the Executive Committee has appointed Tracy Gantz (a former AHP President and current Individual member) as Interim Executive Board member until June 30, 2013. All other Officers will move forward one position on the Executive Board.

"It is with sadness that we lose Summer Best from the AHP Board," says Executive Director Chris Brune. "She was the 1999 AHP Student Award winner and has been very active in the association since then. She was not only a great asset to the Board, but a great friend to all of us. We wish her the best and look forward to welcoming her back as a member real soon."

The Board welcomes Tracy Gantz and appreciates her willingness to contribute her experience and time to the association. Members are invited to learn more about Tracy and other AHP Board members on the AHP website.

Spread the word to students about available internships

The 2013 AHP Student Internship listings and applications are now available online to college students who have an interest in horses and seek a career in equine publishing media.

"We've redesigned the listings to make them more user-friendly for students to search on the internships which interest them," says Judy Lincoln, AHP Student Programs Coordinator.

The AHP Student Internship Program is a great way to provide students with the resume-building experience that's so critical to today's job market. Interns gain valuable hands-on real life experience and AHP members acquire additional help when and where they need it most.

Student Membership is open to high school, college, and graduate students for an annual fee of $25. Student Members receive an opportunity to attend the AHP annual seminar at a reduced registration fee, a free listing in the online AHP Membership Directory, the AHP e-newsletter, "AHP For the record," and are eligible to enter several classes in the AHP annual Awards Contest. Learn how to become a Student Member

AHP Student Award Contest awards up to three $750 travel awards to attend the AHP seminar in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on June 20-22, 2013. Travel Award winners have an opportunity to meet leading equine publishing professionals and discuss career possibilities during the three days of educational sessions and related activities. One Travel Award winner will be selected at the seminar as the 2013 Student Award winner and receives a cash award of $1,000. Students are eligible to enter the contest if they are a high school senior or an undergraduate college student during the 2012-2013 college year before graduation. All qualified applicants receive a complimentary Student annual membership, a complimentary Student registration certificate for the 2013 seminar and a critique of their resume. The AHP Student Award Contest is open to residents of the US and Canada only. Rules and entry forms will be available online in October.

All my heroes are cowboys in Colorado Springs 2013

ProRodeo Hall of Fame

Many of us who grew up in the horse industry believe in "my heroes have always been cowboys." Our family headed to Boston Garden every time the rodeo came to town when I was a kid. We loved the tales of the Old West and the nail-biting thrill of rodeo events like bronc riding and barrel racing. Whether you are a rodeo fan or not one yet, AHP members who attend the 2013 seminar in Colorado Springs will have an opportunity to explore the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy as it's only a few short steps from the Colorado Springs Marriott.

It's hard to miss the one and a half life-size bronze of Casey Tibbs on Necktie in front of the building. The Hall, established in 1979, is located adjacent to the national headquarters of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA).

The Hall includes presentations on rodeo's history from trail drives and ranch work as well as contemporary rodeo and the "road to a championship." The evolution of gear, equipment and clothing is explained in Heritage Hall. Exhibits featuring memorabilia from 160-plus inductees fill the Hall of Champions.

So add to your must-see list the ProRodeo Hall of Fame to learn all about rodeo, its history, and its impact on Western American culture.

Ready to book your room?

The Colorado Springs Marriott has set up a link to AHP group reservations. The group code has already been entered with the king/double standard room rate of $120. All rooms come with either a mountain or city view, but views cannot be guaranteed at this rate.

Experience Southern charm, shrimp and grits and history in 2014

Francis Marion Hotel

The AHP Board of Directors always holds its October meeting in the city where the AHP seminar will be held in two years. The historic Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston, South Carolina will be the headquarters for both the October 2012 board meeting and the 2014 annual seminar. The Hotel is named for the Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox." It has a long tradition of gracious service, elegant accommodations, and hosting splendid banquets and events dating back to its opening in 1924. After a $12 million dollar restoration, the hotel continues to offer its guests the grandeur and opulence of the 1900s, but with modern conveniences.

Charleston is a city full of history, charm and great food. "It was hands down at the top of the list voted by members in the survey AHP conducted," says Chris Brune. "The Board is excited to be the forerunners for the group to explore the hotel and the city to help prepare for 2014."

JetBlue recently announced daily, nonstop air service to Charleston International Airport. This is great news for AHP members who will be attending the 2014 seminar in Charleston, South Carolina on June 19-21.  JetBlue plans to operate three daily nonstop flights per day with two to John F. Kennedy International Airport and one to Boston's Logan International Airport.

AHP releases the 2012 Equine Industry Survey results to the general equine public

American Horse Publications (AHP) conducted its second online nationwide equine industry survey from March 5th, 2012, through May 20th, 2012.  Sponsored by Kentucky Equine Research, Merck Animal Health, and Pfizer Animal Health, the objectives of the second survey were to gauge participation trends and management practices in the U.S. equine industry, to identify critical issues facing the equine industry as perceived by those who own or manage horses, and to better understand issues pertaining to horse health and nutrition.

The survey was limited to men and women, 18 years of age and older, who currently own or manage at least one horse and live in the United States. This study was anonymous, meaning no one, not even members of the research team, are able to associate survey information with responses.

Upon the conclusion of the survey, 11,320 responses were collected.  After removing duplicates, respondents from outside the U.S., and non-horse owners or managers, there were 10,539 usable responses.

The complete results of this survey are now available online  at the AHP website under Resources. Excerpts from this study must be referenced as 2012 AHP Horse Industry Survey sponsored by Kentucky Equine Research, Merck Animal Health and Pfizer Animal Health.

What is ski joring?

I may be the only one in the horse industry who had never heard of this sport before, but I thought it might be newsworthy just in case I wasn't the only one who was clueless.  Skijoring or ski joring (derived from the Norwegian word skikjøring meaning ski driving) was brought to my attention by a new student member who writes a blog called Snow Horse.

Skijoring Equestrian skijoring consists of a team of a single horse, generally guided by a rider, pulling the person on skis who carries no poles and simply hangs onto a tow rope in a manner akin to water skiing. Skijoring behind a horse is said to have originated as a method of winter travel, but today is primarily a competitive sport. Skijoring was a demonstration sport in the 1928 Winter Olympics.

The North American Ski Joring Association holds competitions in which a rider guides the horse while the skier navigates a series of jumps and obstacles. More informal competitions are held on flat ground over short courses, often as simple sprint races on a straightaway, sometimes with turns on the course. Competitors often use short skis and modified water skiing towing equipment, though often this is as simple as a single tow rope looped around the horn or attached to the back of a western saddle.

The World Skijoring Championships have been held in Whitefish, Montana since 2009, as a part of the annual Whitefish Winter Carnival. The city of Leadville, Colorado (129 miles NW of Colorado Springs) has organized an equestrian competition since 1949, which has a much higher emphasis on speed and is held in March. The Leadville version is normally spelled as two words: "Ski Joring." A horse and rider pull a skier at a fast pace through a course that has gates, jumps and rings. The skier is timed through the course, and penalties are assessed by missing gates or jumps, and by missing or dropping any of the rings.

So if you didn't know about ski joring, you do now!

3 Types of eBooks for Your Niche Magazine

NicheMedia summarizes the article, What Content Marketers Need to Know About Interactive eBooks posted by Clare McDermott on ContentMarketingInstitute.com | September 18, 2012.

Making your niche magazine available to your readers in tablet form is important. Since more and more people are purchasing tablets, it is important that you make your niche magazine available in this format so that readers can access the product anywhere. In order to help you get a better understanding of what an eBook is, we have put together the 3 different types available.

  • eBook: This is your very basic form of a digital version of your magazine available. A simple eBook will give you a static presentation of your niche magazine. You will be able to make the font size larger, however, other interactive features are not typically available.
  • Enhanced eBook: An enhanced eBook is the next step up from the basic eBook. This format allows you to make the content much more interactive and engaging for readers. Audio and video elements are often available with an enhanced eBook format, which will give your audience members a new way to interact with your content.
  • Interactive eBook: The interactive eBook format will take your digital version to a whole new level. Consider an interactive eBook to use elements such as: three dimensional objects, quizzes, interactive infographics, animation and video.

It is important to make sure you choose the right digital platform for your niche magazine in order to give your readers an engaging and interactive experience.
