2012 Annual Awards Contest Update

It's that time of year when members start thinking ahead to 2012. However, it's also time to look back at 2011 and start selecting the best of the past year and entering the 2012 AHP Annual Awards Contest. Contest rules have not been released quite yet, however the deadline date will be February 22, 2012. Take time to start collecting those tear sheets and archiving those URLs.

TIP: Locating online content from the previous year can often be time consuming if the articles are not archived on your site with dates. Create a folder on your FTP site for Awards entries and copy the files there. Be sure your URL includes your site address/the date the article was published/title of article. Also, adding the published date to every article you post online verifies the publication date.

Why enter the contest?

  • Rewarding accomplishment- Nothing feels better than being recognized for your work. Whether you are staff, a freelancer, or business, achieving excellence in your field is rewarding and demonstrates your high standards.
  • Constructive critique - Every entry receives a constructive critique from the judges. Their comments can help you or your staff to improve their work or be rewarded with a job well done.
  • Award plaques and certificates - All finalists receive a plaque as class winner or a certificate for second, third or honorable mention. Staff members and freelancers love receiving these as recognition of their achievement. Winners also receive an image to use to announce their First Place.
  • Promotion - Members can use the AHP Newsgroup to promote their publishing excellence in a press release or publish their awards in their publications and digital media.
  • Resume builder - Listing your awards on your resume can build your reputation in the equine publishing world.

Members will be notified as soon as the rules and entry forms have been posted to the AHP website.

By Jim Belosic | December 28, 2011

Is your Facebook page secure? With such a critical marketing tool, are you keeping your virtual house locked and safe? With so much focus on managing the wall and running promotions, Facebook page security is often overlooked. The good news is that Facebook's security is actually quite effective. A plea to end the wearisome 100-year dialogue of how to define the profession. Is it really that complicated?

By Mark Schaefer | December 22, 2011 | Ragan.com

I started my career as a public relations professional 30 years ago. Since then my career has morphed into new areas like sales, marketing, business development, consulting and teaching, but there is a piece of my heart that will always belong to PR.  I'm disheartened that people today still ask the same tired question that swirled around the profession when I started three decades ago: "What is PR?"

Mr. Magazine's M.O.: 'Dare to Be Different' and Other Tips for Success in an Innovative World

By Samir "Mr. Magazine" Husni, Ph.D. | November 2011 | Publishing Executive

I have a collection of more than 1,000 neckties, however one of them stands apart from all the rest. It is a red tie with tens of white sheep and one-and only one-black sheep. I wear it to class the very first day of school mainly to remind the students about the need to be different. Forget unique. There is nothing unique in this world. A sheep is a sheep is sheep. However, a black sheep is different than a white sheep, and thus the theme of the class becomes "Dare to Be Different." READ MORE
