Why I Joined AHP

"The AHP is a fantastic organization. I have been attending the seminars for the past six years and each year I take away fresh new ideas I am able to quickly implement. I am continuously impressed with the level of professionalism and skill set of the speakers and the attendees. I consider it a true privilege to be a member."

Whitney Allen

USHJA Director of Marketing and Communications and USHJA Foundation Managing Director, United States Hunter Jumper Association.

Member News

Summer Best has been appointed executive director of the Foundation for the Florida Horse Park effective July 1.  Her career has included roles as managing editor for Florida Equine Publications since 2006, as well as advertising manager for The Florida Horse magazine, Wire to Wire and Horse Capital Digest. Prior to that, Summer was the marketing manager and magazine editor with Seminole Feed in Ocala. She also spent several years in Amarillo, Texas, as field editor for The American Quarter Horse Journal. Summer serves as an AHP Executive Committee Member.

Omega Fields® has announced that Kevin Blackburn has been promoted to Director of Operations of the company's Newton, Wis. milling and blending operation. As Director of Operations he will be responsible for plant facilities and all aspects of manufacturing, including ingredient storage and handling, milling, packaging, and shipping.

Lucy Acton, the award-winning Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred editor who directed and enriched the magazine with vision, strength and literary grace, died on June 7. A respected journalist throughout the regional horse industry and beyond, Lucy remained dedicated to its causes almost to the very end. The editor title she earned in 2002 and carried at Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred belied the depth and scope of her role at the monthly magazine. Lucy's father, Snowden Carter, was an esteemed chronicler of the turf and editor of Maryland Horse, precursor to Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred, as well as one of the organizational members of American Horse Publications.

Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH International), is the new name for the organization formerly NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped Association). PATH International better expresses the scope of the 42-year-old organization whose 6,300 therapy horses and 3,500 instructors serve 42,000 children and adults with physical, mental andpsychological challenges at 800+ member centers around the world.

President's Message

Dear AHP Members:

Sandy and Cheryl

Outgoing President Sandy Kucharski with AHP President Cheryl Erpelding

Diana De Rosa Photo

It was great to see all of you that were able to attend this year's AHP seminar in beautiful San Diego's Mission Bay. The venue was amazing and I enjoyed the sessions that I was able to attend. Ever since my first year of finally deciding whether to pay my printer or attend the 2000 seminar in Irving, TX, I have never looked back. AHP's seminar has always paid me back (and my printer) by learning new ways to help my publications become better and stay profitable. Even now where we are still facing uncertain economic times, going to the seminar has helped me with new ideas to help my business. Plus, I usually meet new advertisers, and I always have fun spending time with all of our equine media members.

I encourage all of you to take advantage of next year's seminar, May 31-June 2 in Colonial Williamsburg, VA. You can visit the AHP website and view the San Diego Seminar program to see the type of sessions and activities we had. Also the AHP seminar blog has some notes from our members on sessions they attended, beach horseback rides and more.

Be sure to let me or any of our board members know what you'd like to see from your organization. AHP is one of the best run associations I have ever been involved with. Chris Brune our executive director and her sister and assistant Judy Lincoln are outstanding and keep everything running smoothly.

May you all continue to thrive and succeed in our wonderful equine media publishing industry.

Taking the AHP Logo from Old to New

American Horse Publications Reveals New Association Logo

Over a year ago, the AHP Board discussed changing the association name and logo at their June 2010 meeting in Lexington. The publishing industry was changing and the AHP membership now included a broader variety of categories. Changing the name and/or logo of a 40-year-old association was not something the Board took lightly. After months of online discussion and feedback from past AHP presidents, the Board voted to keep the name American Horse Publications, but add the tagline, "Promoting excellence in equine media." In addition, the Board decided to offer an opportunity for AHP members and staff to submit a redesign of the AHP logo using the new tagline for a chance to win $200 or a free seminar registration.

Over 40 different designs were submitted by 14 different designers. The Board narrowed the field to six designers who were asked to re-submit designs based on new guidelines. The six finalists included Cathy Baer, The Whip; Tonya Morgan, equestrian magazine; Iva Zima, Gaitpost; Vicki Kerr Wemple, Today's Horse Trader; Stephanie Bury, American Paint Horse Association; and Barrie Reightler, Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred.

Cathy Baer, Tonya Morgan and Iva Zima re-submitted new designs of the AHP logo which the Board reviewed at its June 2011 meeting in San Diego. The design created by Tonya Leigh Morgan was voted as the new logo for American Horse Publications. Tonya is Art Director for the United States Equestrian Federation which publishes equestrian magazine. Her portfolio can be viewed at www.tonyaleighdesign.com

In the months ahead, AHP members will begin to see the transition take place from old to new logo. "I have to admit that I was hard to convince of any change to an association that I have been involved with since 1975," says Executive Director Chris Brune. "I am pleased that the name American Horse Publications remains, but I feel the new tagline strengthens our association mission and the new logo gives AHP a more current design while still retaining the branding of the association."

AHP members may request the new logo for use in showing their membership in American Horse Publications by contacting Chris Brune at ahorsepubs@aol.com

The AHP Chris Brune Spirit Award is presented to the member who has done the most consistently to assist and support the association. The individual is selected by the Board of Directors. In 2004, the inaugural award was presented (as a surprise) to Chris Brune and the title changed to the AHP Chris Brune Spirit Award. Previous award winners include Lua Oas Southard, Barrie Reightler, Ellen Kiser, Daniel Lew, Christy West and Becki Pitcher.

"Doug Hayes is the person you want on your team. He's dependable, hard-working, smart, talented, and will come to your rescue in a heartbeat," says Chris Brune.

Doug is currently the Director of Business Development at AQHA. He served as the 2003-2004 AHP President. He grew up on a Kansas farm and has owned horses all his life. He and his wife, Tadhi, have three children, Ben, Casey and Emma. Doug is an avid team roper, a rabid Kansas State University football and basketball fan, and loves woodworking.

Every year AHP casts out its net to catch the finest and brightest students interested in a career in equine publishing. This year, three outstanding candidates, Megan Brincks, Stephanie Smolek and Elizabeth Walsh, were selected as 2011 Student Award Travel Winners, and won a $750 cash award toward travel expenses to the seminar. All three young ladies were interviewed by the Student Award Committee during the seminar and Stephanie Smolek was selected the 2011 AHP Student Award Winner.

Stephanie attends the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she majors in Agricultural Journalism and Animal Science with an equine option. She loves to write, but also enjoys photography and social media. Her goal is to work for an equine publication or equine association where she hopes to include various communication mediums in her career.

American Horse Publications offers students interested in a career in equine publishing with several opportunities to participate in its association. Information is available online at the AHP web site at www.americanhorsepubs.org under Students.

San Diego Seminar Follow Up

San Diego, California, proved to be a fun destination for AHP seminar attendees despite the "June Gloom." For AHP members unable to attend or for attendees who missed a session or two to either network or explore the city or beach, you'll find that the AHP Social Media Task Force was busy during the seminar tweeting and taking notes. In this issue, we have included reports on several sessions which are also published at the AHP Seminar Blog .  Available handouts from all seminar sessions and an updated attendee list can be downloaded from the AHP web site at San Diego Seminar .

This issue includes the notes from Digital Publishing Strategy, Creating Multi-Media Sales Proposals that Work, and Media Trends in Publishing. Next month, we will include notes on more sessions.

Media Trends in Publishing

Christine Hamilton, Editor of The American Quarter Horse Journal, presents the highpoints in the Keynote address given by Skip Zimbalist, Chairman and CEO of Active Interest Media (AIM), a media company formed in 2003 to serve niche enthusiast markets.

  • Providing mass media to mass media audience is suffering the most.
  • Providing more specific media to specific media audience is growing - niche media
  • Regarding the shift in advertising dollars over the past 5-10 years: The big winner is the Internet; The big losers are newspapers, radio and broadcast TV; "Magazines have held their own," going from holding 13% of the advertising dollar pie to 12%, "because they are targeted."
  • "I am very bullish on magazines." The weakest part of that model is the newsstand, but subscription sales are making up for that loss.
  • "The elephant in the room is the i-Pad." It's the game changer. "I see it analogous to movies when they first came out they were considered 'portable plays.'" It will change our media landscape, "but there will always be people who want a paper form" of media.
  • "No one is making money in the i-Pad right now. But it is important to start dipping your toes into the water of electronic media." Who is leading the way? Wired and Popular Science
  • All of our multi-media efforts should aim to support each other.
  • Watch out for alienating similar but different audiences - "You can't provide a magazine that serves both skiers and snowboarders."

Breyer Beach Painted Model Winner

AHP members attending the AHP "Hoofprints in the Sand Seminar" in San Diego, California were invited to participate in a contest for the best beach-themed painted model horse sponsored by Breyer Animal Creations. Breyer provided craft kits on request and attendees submitted a model created by themselves or a staff member.

The winner received a certificate for the Grand Prize - a custom painted Breyer model and a Welsh Pony model. Runner-ups received a beach-themed Stablemate.

The Grand Prize went to the entry from the AQHA Marketing Department represented by Todd Branson and Jada Buchanan.
