The First Two Weeks of March
By Chris Brune
The 2011 annual awards contest is underway and off to the judges. For the first two weeks in March, I was totally immersed in news that happened in the equine world in 2010. It may seem that I'm a bit behind the times, but I love the opportunity to review the past year through the eyes of equine media.
It's not that I have time to read every article word for word, but I often get caught by a catchy headline, a familiar name, or a publication I have never seen. In a past life, I was an editor of a monthly horse magazine for 20 years, so flipping through the printed pages means a lot more to me than text and photos. I remember the days of scoring that great interview or having an outstanding cover shot. The blood, the sweat, the tears...I've experienced it all.
The annual awards contest is an amazing endeavor, not only the preparation, but also the body of work it represents. As publishers, writers and photographers, we are the historians for the horse industry, leaving a legacy in print for generations to come.
But future generations will also be viewing the horse world in multi-media platforms and coverage of events like the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games will be seen through the eyes of writers, photographers, videographers, broadcasters, bloggers and anyone with pen-in-hand or a camcorder or phone.
This year's contest was not the largest in history, but entries did increase over last year. In 2008, entries hit an all-time high of 1,092. Last year, the total was 782; this year 839. More importantly, participation in the 2011 contest did break records with 118 AHP members vying for an opportunity to be recognized for their published work.
I state this every year, but it's worth repeating. Each year, the contest is different. The classes basically stay the same, but the entries don't. Anyone can be a winner. The contest is a way to showcase the entries that excel, but it also provides a way for members to grow and to improve as well as for AHP to achieve our mission of promoting excellence in equine media.
So onward to the next phase of the contest: selecting the finalists. Seeing the results come in is another part of the process that I love. But, ask me what my favorite part of the contest is? Seeing the winners' smiling faces at the awards presentations! Hope to see many smiles in San Diego. |

What Is "Interactive" Anyway? (Part 1)
By John Parsons, Byte Back
Posted online by Publishing Executive, November 1, 2010 As publishers go through the five stages of grief over dying media, I'm struck by the bargaining phase. For many, it consists of attempts to insert interactive components into their digital editions, hoping to strike a deal with advertisers headed for the door. "Just wait. Your ad will be next to a video that everyone will be watching." As new systems and e-readers proliferate, we seem to think that magazines will magically revive once we figure out how to make static content interactive. READ MORE
What Is "Interactive" Anyway? (Part 2)
By John Parsons, Byte Back
Posted online by Publishing Executive, February 28, 2011
In Part 1 of this blog, I lamented the lack of consensus on what constitutes effective interactivity for digital magazines. Since then, I had the opportunity to ask more questions during my Gilbane Boston panel session on Mobile App development "from the trenches." The panelists represented both business and consumer titles. READ MORE

What Are Hashtag (#) Symbols ?
Definition: The # symbol, called a hashtag, is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages.
Thanks to AHP member, Lisa Kemp, and the Twitter Help Center, for providing some guidelines on using Hashtags.
- Use the hashtag symbol # before relevant keywords in a Tweet to categorize those Tweets to show more easily in Twitter Search.
- Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets in that category.
- Hashtags can occur anywhere in the Tweet.
- Hashtagged words that become very popular are often Trending Topics.
- If Tweet with a hashtag is on a public account, anyone who does a search for that hashtag may find your Tweet.
- Don't #spam #with #hashtags. Don't over-tag a single Tweet. (use no more than 3 hashtags per Tweet.)
- Use hashtags only on Tweets relevant to the topic.
- Remember you have to put the # (called a 'hashtag') before the word you want to turn into a searchable active link
Suggestions for horse-related Hashtags you can use that are good for Twitter.
