That Ole Bulletin Board

by Bonnie Davis, AHP Individual Member

Used to be a time every tack, feed or saddle shop had a bulletin board. Nowadays, bulletin boards seem to have gone the way of dial telephones! Yet if one takes the time to think about it, a bulletin board is a source of free advertisement and increased customer base!

Everyone likes to read a bulletin board. See the latest events coming up. Read ads for horses wanted and for sale along with trailers, tack and equipment. Plus special notices for clubs and events.

A bulletin board placed at the BACK of a store will draw customers THROUGH the store. Folks have to walk down an aisle to get to the bulletin board to tack a notice and to read it. Along the way, they see items on racks and shelves. Even list your own store's up-coming sale items with a 'Bulletin Board Sale Preview'.

It doesn't have to be a fancy board -- a piece of cork, some tacks and a little sign with bulletin board rules is all that is needed. Generally, notices should be left for two weeks and dated by the poster. Club and organization events can be left for 30 days.

About the only hard and fast rule for bulletin boards is about once a week, the board should be read and OLD out-dated notices taken down. If undated, remove 'em. To keep folks walking in to read and or post, keep the ole bulletin board up to date. And to let folks know you've got a bulletin board, post a notice in an ad or on your store window "Free Bulletin Board Posting". Let our customers know what YOUR club or organization is doing!

The Re-Design Myth

Is a Web site re-design the answer to digital woes? Maybe not.

By Jonathan Hills, The Spinning Hamster blog

If you've ever held a job in the digital group of a large-scale corporation it's highly likely that you've been:

a) Sneered at by others in the company with slightly frightened eyes for being "one of the Web people"

b) Involved in a major re-design

While there are plenty of amusing stories to tell around point a), the subject of this post is everybody's favorite this-can-solve-all-our-problems-and-serve-as-a-great-emotional-crutch-to-make-us-all-feel-better about-ourselves project. The re-design.

Dr. Samir Husni
Dr. Samir Husni, aka "Mr. Magazine"™, is the director of the Magazine Innovation Center at the University of Mississippi, School of Journalism. All quotations are from him. He presented two sessions, Developing Value of Editorial Content and The Long and Short of Editorial Content.

  • Magazine readership has GROWN over the past 5 years.

Use digital to enhance the print and sell subscriptions
  • Cover - is the restaurant sales pitch
    TOC - is your menu
Short - appetizers and dessert (some magazines survive only on this)
Long - the main dishes - full features, one or two
