News

On December 24, 2010, the equine publishing world lost a wonderful friend. Moira C. Harris, equine book author, former editor of Horse Illustrated and member of American Horse Publications, passed away from breast cancer at the age of 46.

Moira began her career in equine publishing as managing editor of Horse Illustrated in 1993. In 1995, she became editor of the magazine, a position she held for over a decade. During that time, she also authored several books, including "Dressage by the Letter" (Howell Book House), "K.I.S.S. Guide to Caring for Your Horse" (Lyons Press) and "Mastering the Art of Horsemanship: John Lyon's Spiritual Journey" (BowTie Press).

Moira leaves behind her husband Paul Reeve; her twosisters Phaedra and Adrienne Valencia; her mother Elizabeth Valencia, and her Thoroughbred mare, Missy.

Insight: Not Just For Navel-Gazers Anymore
by L.A. Pomeroy, AHP Individual Member

Regarded by his peers as one of the best writers of the 19th century, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. said, "A moment's insight is sometimes worth a life's experience."  Granted, O.W.H. was referring to insight in terms of clear perception, but had he lived in our age of social media, he might have added how worthwhile 'Insights' are on Facebook.

Visible only to FB page administrators, the Insights dashboard is a 24/7 marketing tool of graphs and statistics divided into two categories:  Users and Interactions.

Flash Yourself

by Bonnie Davis, AHP Individual Member

Regardless if it's print media or electronic, advertising is the way to get the word out!!  If folks don't know about you, how can anyone find you!?  So flash yourself!!  Get your name out in front of the equine world - and beyond.  Not everyone who reads owns a horse.

Within 50 miles of every home office is an equine event - backyard horse show, 4H, FFA pancake breakfast, trail ride.  Smaller local clubs, associates, organizations are looking for ads from local businesses and publications to offset expenses just as national events want bucks too.  Those smaller, local ads will bring more traffic to your door than national advertising in many cases.  So ask 'em if they'd like a business card ad in a program.  Or offer to pay for the flyers they're posting on the bulletin board with YOUR name added to 'em as sponsor.  Donate a year's subscription to a publication.  Give 'em a free ad in electronic media.  Support your local businesses and your local businesses will support you.

Get the word out you're here.  You're open.  You're ready for business.  Flash yourself!

MEDIA POST: Five Resolutions To Grow And Maintain Email Lists

by Neil Berman, January 3, 2011
The holidays have come to a close, and email marketers are reveling in their swelling lists of new customers.

While no one likes a party pooper, here's a sobering thought: Each year email marketers lose roughly one-third of their email addresses to list churn, bounces, unsubscribes or spam complaints, according to the Email Experience Council.

With addresses on email lists turning over every three years, growing email lists must be a priority for marketers. Good list maintenance will help reduce churn while giving you a more accurate view of your delivery, open and click-through rates. A clean list also will ensure that you're in compliance with CAN-SPAM laws.

Growing and maintaining lists is not difficult, but it does take effort. To make the process easy, I've developed five New Year's resolutions for growing and maintaining email lists.

FOLIO: How One B-to-B Publisher Turned Social Media Into a Real Business

by Matt Kinsman, January 4, 2011
While many independent publishers continue to struggle to reach that "sweet spot" of digital media accounting for 8-15 percent of total revenue, Moose River Media generates 20 percent of its revenue from online, driven in large part by monetizing online communities of a size not often seen (nor sustained) in b-to-b.

FOLIO: You Survived 2009/2010, Now What?

by Frank Finn, January 6, 2011

Do you feel as though you have spent the last three years locked in hand-to-hand combat, fighting a never-ending war? Join the club. Since the Great Recession hit in 2008, magazine publishing has often seemed like a non-stop battle, with hard-won gains on some fronts and bitter defeats on others.

But now that the worst is over, publishers must shift out of survival mode and position their operations for growth. As in the aftermath of combat, it is time to bury the dead, patch up the wounded and rally your best troops to fight and win the next battle.

Follow the steps outlined here to give your publishing operation a check up and prepare to exploit a more favorable economy.

AHP CareerTrack Works
Race For Education recently posted a job listing for a student services position on the AHP CareerTrack page on the AHP web site. The listing was the only place the job offer was published publicly. According to Elisabeth Jensen at RFE, they received 80 - 85 applications. While not all came directly from the AHP web site, many AHP members reposted the job on their web sites, showing that the AHP network is a very effective means of communication.

AHP members may send job postings to Chris at ahorsepubs@aol.com as a text message. AHP CareerTrack messages are distributed to the AHP e-list and then posted to the AHP web site.
