State legislators to speak at Chamber breakfast on May 22

 

Johnston county Legilative BreakfastJoin all seven local Chambers of Commerce for the Johnston County Legislative Breakfast. The event is set for Tuesday, May 22 at 7:30 am in the Great Hall at Johnston Community College in Smithfield.

 

Invited guests include NC Senator David Rouzer and NC Representatives Leo Daughtry and J. H. Langdon Jr. 

 

The state leaders will address issues that will be on the agenda at this year's short session of the General Assembly, which started this week. There will be plenty of time for questions from the audience. To register, please visit the link below:

CWBN Spring Tea will honor scholarship winners

The CWBN will name scholarship recipients at its 2012 Spring Tea Scholarship Luncheon on Thursday, May 17 at the Holiday Inn Express in Smithfield. The speaker for the event will be Tyronna Hooker, North Carolina's 2011 Teacher of the Year.

 

Upscale seafood restaurant opens near I-95
 

Boathouse 
The Boathouse Seafood and Grill celebrated its grand opening on April 25 with a pre-lunch reception for Chamber members. The new business, located at 275 N. Equity Drive in Smithfield, has an upscale steak and seafood menu. Proprietors are Fahim Parvanta and Panayotis Bobotsiavis - who also own Mayflower Seafood in West Smithfield. Carrie Wilkerson Lee

Carrie Wilkerson Lee, a fifth grade teacher at Powhatan Elementary, was named winner of the Flame for Learning Award on May 7 at the 19th annual Flame for Learning Banquet.

The event is sponsored each year by the seven Chambers of Commerce in Johnston County.

With this honor comes the title of Johnston County Schools Teacher of the year. Ms. Lee's best practice, "Getting Global" will be posted on the district website along with the other 19 best practices submitted by the twenty semi-finalists.

"Superwoman" honored with Athena Award

The Chamber has given the prestigious Athena Award to Rosa Andrews, director of the Small Business Center at Johnston Community College. The award recognizes the outstanding achievements of women in the Smithfield-Selma community. A national award, it is presented in over 300 communities and is sponsored locally by CORESTAFF Services.

"Superwoman" is defined as a woman who fulfills her many roles with apparently superhuman efficiency. "Superwoman" is also the word used by her nominator to describe this year's Athena Award recipient.

Rosa Andrews is multi-talented and does not hesitate to use her talents. No matter what the need, Rosa does her best to accommodate it. Counseling entrepreneurs, scheduling seminars, facilitating, writing grants, and driving Leadership Johnston all over the county are just a few of her many talents...
