Smithfield-Selma High School's Lamar Minter was recognized on Saturday, April 14th at the Triangle Town Center Barnes & Noble store (Raleigh, NC) as one of the winners in the "My Favorite Teacher" contest sponsored by Barnes & Noble.

set for May 4-5 in Smithfield

 

Ham & Yam Festival

Now in its 28th year, the Smithfield Ham & Yam Festival will host free concerts at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5.

 

Legendary southern rock band, Molly Hatchet, will take the stage on Friday evening and country group, The Lost Trailers, will perform on Saturday. Craft vendors will line the streets on Saturday, May 5, along with entertainment on two stages and fun activities for the entire family.

Boost Mobile on S. Bright Leaf has grand opening
 

Boost Mobile 
Wireless World 1, Inc. dba Boost Mobile and Virgin Wireless celebrated its grand opening on April 20 and 21. The new store, located at 909 S. Bright Leaf Boulevard in the Food Lion Shopping Center in Smithfield, sells Direct TV, security cameras, phones and accessories as well as wireless service.  Chambers to name Teacher of the Year

Johnston County's Teacher of the Year will be named on May 7 at the 19th Annual Flame For Learning Award Banquet at 6 pm at the Johnston County Agricultural Center. Speaker at this year's event will be Dr. Tom Williams, founder of Strategic Educational Alliances, Inc. and a former assistant superintendent with the Johnston County Schools.

 

In an effort to support and elevate the recognition level of local educators, the Johnston County Association of Chambers of Commerce initiated this internationally recognized program. Through the aid of business sponsors, the association secures funds to reward twenty outstanding educators for their innovation and creativity in the classroom - and one will be named the school system's Teacher of the Year for 2012-2013.

CWBN Spring Tea will honor scholarship winners

The CWBN will name scholarship recipients at its 2012 Spring Tea Scholarship Luncheon on Thursday, May 17 at the Holiday Inn Express in Smithfield. The speaker for the event will be Tyronna Hooker, North Carolina's 2011 Teacher of the Year.

 

President's Surprise Patrol visits Pine Level

The Chamber's President's Surprise Patrrol recently made a stop at Parkside Cafe in Pine Level. Owner Connie Pennell receives some fresh homemade cookies, balloons and other goodies from Chamber Ambassadors Gretchen Reed (Doubletree Personnel), Rose House (Four Oaks Bank) and Chamber President Rick Childrey. The President's Surprise Patrol periodically makes brief unannounced visits to members of the Chamber to thank them for their support. Be on the lookout, your business might be next!

The good dentist is Selma's shining star

Dr. Dicky Parrish

The Chamber has presented a 2011 Jimmy Creech Small Business Person of the Year Award to long-time Selma dentist, Dr. Dicky Parrish. The award was sponsored by Stancil Oil Company.

Dr. Parrish was born and raised in the northern part of Johnston County. He is a 1976 graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry and was chosen for the Academy of General Dentistry Award from the graduating class. He was later honored in Pinehurst by the Academy of General Dentistry.

Right after completing dental school, Dicky moved back to Johnston County and opened his dental office on Waddell Street in Selma. He continues to practice there today. Several years ago he purchased...
