Former Smithfield-Selma High School Football Coach Elbert Moye will be inducted into the Johnston County Sports Hall of Fame on April 28. Mr. Moye, who died in August 2011 at the age of 91, coached the Spartans to a 67-43-5 record from 1969-1979. He had three undefeated seasons. Read More

For Learning Award on May 7

Johnston County's Teacher of the Year will be named on May 7 at the 19th Annual Flame For Learning Award Banquet at 6 pm at the Johnston County Agricultural Center.

 

In an effort to support and elevate the recognition level of local educators, the Johnston County Association of Chambers of Commerce initiated this internationally recognized program. Through the aid of business sponsors, the association secures funds to reward twenty outstanding educators for their innovation and creativity in the classroom - and one will be named the school system's Teacher of the Year for 2012-2013.

CWBN accepting scholarship applications, sets spring tea and recognition luncheon for May 17

 

CWBN
The Chamber Women's Business Network is now accepting applications for its Career Advancement Scholarship. Funds are available to women age 21 and older who reside and/or work in Johnston County and seek advanced educational and professional development to reach their career goals in the area of entrepreneurship and business. Deadline for submitting an application is April 18.
 
Tyronna Hooker
The CWBN will name scholarship recipients at its 2012 Spring Tea and Recognition Luncheon on Thursday, May 17 at the Holiday Inn Express in Smithfield. The speaker for the event will be Tyronna Hooker, North Carolina's 2011 Teacher of the Year.

 

New businesses open in Smithfield

The Chamber hosted two grand openings recently for new businesses that have opened near I-95 in Smithfield. Above, General Manager Joe Lynch cuts the ribbon at the Holiday Inn Express, located at 190 S. Equity Drive. The hotel has 70 rooms, indoor pool and meeting facilities. Below: Brian and Jamie O'Branovich are the proud owners of Salon 29:11 at 226 Venture Drive. The company features all hair styling services, manicures/pedicures and massage therapy.

NCDOT approves county transportation plan
 

 

The North Carolina Transportation has approved a new Johnston County Comprehensive Transportation Plan. Smithfield, Selma, other towns, and Johnston County government had previously approved the plan which identifies future needs for highways, public transportation, rail, bicycles and pedestrians. Proposed projects are not funded, In the map above, Smithfield-Selma area road improvements are identified with dotted lines.

Tommy Williford

The Chamber recently presented a Distinguished Citizen Award to a person whose success in life can be attributed to his customer service, his perseverance and his generosity. He is Clarence Thomas Williford Jr.

 

The award was sponsored by Dees, Jackson, Jackson & Associates.

Tommy Williford was born in Wilson and attended Charles L. Coon High School and later, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During the Korean War, he served as s a medical specialist in the North Carolina National Guard. He likes to tell people that on a Guard trip to Fort Bragg, the truck in which he was riding stopped in Smithfield. He looked at his buddy next to him and said, "Why would anybody want to live in a one-horse town like this;" never dreaming that Smithfield would become the town he would come to love and make his living.

After graduating from UNC, he returned to Wilson to work with his father in the struggling new car business. After a year of working with no pay, his parents pushed him to leave home...
