New law bans computers, TVs from landfills

 Computers must be recycled

Beginning July 1, computers and TVs are barred from North Carolina landfills in a law passed in 2010 by the General Assembly. Equipment now must be recycled and a number of options are available for residents and businesses. Items that can no longer be thrown out under the new law include TVs, desktop or notebook computers, monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, scanners and printer-scanner-fax machines. The law does not include typewriters, mobile phones, calculators, PDAs, MP3 players, household appliances or large commercial or industrial equipment.
