New & improved Leadership Johnston will start in October
The October retreat will focus on team building. | The 2010-2011 class of Leadership Johnston will see more concentrated efforts in leadership skills training. The nine-month program, which starts the first week of October and is hosted by the county's six Chambers of Commerce and Johnston Community College, will still focus on the many aspects of life in Johnston County. However the program will emphasize helping people find where they can best serve their communities in leadership capacities. Participants will have access to top management in all sectors of the county, from private industry to public service. Applications are being accepted by the Chamber through the end of August. A maximum of 20 students will be enrolled.

Early Learning Center nearing goal

The Johnston Health Early Learning Center needs to enroll just eight more students by August 31 to reach its goal for the next year. The only five-star child care center in Johnston County has been in danger of closing due to funding issues. However an aggressive campaign by parents and staff is close to ensuring the center will remain open. The Early Learning Center is located in the rear of the Johnston Medical Mall in Smithfield and is open weekdays from 6:15 am to 6:00 pm. The director is Ruth Patterson. Chamber adds new technology in conference room
As the start of a three-year effort to makes major improvements to the Chamber office, the Board of Directors has authorized a new video system and screen in the building's large conference room. Chamber members, who receive a discount when using the room for private meetings, can now show presentations, DVDs, videos and access the internet with high-def capability. For more information, contact the Chamber office.

Abernathy headlines economic development luncheon
Ted Abernathy, the executive director of the Southern Growth Policies Board, will be the featured speaker at the Johnston County Economic Development Luncheon on August 3 at 12:00 noon at the Johnston County Agricultural Center. Abernathy, who also spoke in 2009, will focus on the the Triangle's economy as it compares nationally and statewide, Rick Hester, the county manager, will also speak briefly about recent business annoucements.
