LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings!

Chamber partners, summer is here...the three h's, hazy, hot, & humid!  But no complaints here, after the winter we had.  Visitors and guests are flourishing in the Village.  The Chamber remains busy helping out everyone.  Questions run the full gamut, some surprise us and others are the usual.  One of the most recent funny questions was a young man wanting to know "where the worms" were?

The Village offers it's free concert series, movies, and children's productions.  In addition the Greater Port Jefferson Arts council hosts 'Music in the Park'.  So many great things to do and be a part of.  It is no wonder why 'Port Jeff' is the place to hang with friends and family!

The Chamber stays committed in carrying the business communities concern's to Village government. It is receptive in being as inclusive as we possibly can to promote the health and well-being of our members and the community.

Enjoy these lazy hazy days of summer.

Suzanne Velazuqez

Members In The News

Member partners Ron Schlumpf of Arame Salon & Spa and Maureen Calamia of Luminous Spaces got rave reviews and highlighted in the July 1-7, 2011 edition of Long Island Business News under LI Focus-Environmental Green Consulting. Both had partnered to create a green and 'Feng Shui' environment at Ron's business. Congratulations to them both!

Thanks For The Memories

Long standing member/officer/Director/friend of the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, Bill Monahan has resigned from the Board of Directors, giving us 20 years of dedicated service. He was presented with a plaque at the June GMM and a card with a gift certificate to Chamber member Pasta Pasta restaurant for thanks at the Board meeting in July. He will be missed and we all wish him well.

Coming Soon

Member business partner Tommy Schafer is very hard with his new restaurant on West Broadway-Schafer's! Moving ahead with its renovations and hopes for a grand opening to be scheduled in August.

Vine2Wine Ribbon Cutting

In June we welcomed new business member partners, Vine2Wine at 318 Wynn Lane here in the Village. Owners Grace and Joe Tesoriero and Jamel Barnes had a formal ribbon-cutting where they shared their 'boutique' wine and snacks. The proprietors are committed to the satisfaction of their customers. They specialize in small production hand crafted wines which are selected based on taste, quality and value rather than ratings. Of the hundreds of wines tasted only but a few make it to their shelves. Their staff has a combined experience of over 30 years in the wine industry. They are happy to help you select wines by your preferred taste as well as assist in pairing wines for your dinner party

2011 GREEN FEST

3rd Annual Event a Success!

Over 300 attendees walked through the Port Jefferson Village Center on June 4th for the third annual Green Fest.  In collaboration with the Times Beacon Record, this free event had over 35 vendors.  From a solar boat, to hybrid cars, to energy efficient products, there was something for everyone.  Even green-smoothies were made by Whole Food.  Due to the weather, the music later on in the day was bought inside, but enthusiasm never subsided.  Directors Jolie Powell and Melissa Petsco co-chaired the event and their committee did a fine job!

4th OF JULY PARADE

Chamber members and friends lined-up for the annual Independence Day Parade on the 4th of July.  Decked out in patriotic colors, participants walked along the parade path packed with parade viewers and handing out American flags.  This year we had a corvette, a mustang and our member partner, Countryside Animal Hospital had a truck filled with 'furry' friends!  Weather was agreeable and not too hot!  Thank you to all the directors and family of directors who marched in the parade.

OFFICE UPDATES

National Registry:

After much effort and due diligence the Chamber was unsuccessful in getting the Chamber building on the National and State Registry.  The primary reason was the fact that the building had been moved twice. The National Registry has very specific criteria regarding such things and the concern was that the building was not eligible because as a fragment of a larger resource, it has lost integrity of design, setting, material, workmanship and at last the location.

Chamber ALL Painted.

The entire exterior of the Chamber has now been successfully painted including the ramp again from winter damage.  Chamber partner Chris Dexter of Village Painter did a fine job.

Thanks again to Chamber Business Partner, Moloney Funeral Homes (Pete and Dan) who helped underwrite the painting cost. We now have a building we can be very  proud of.

"Check Out Discount with your Library Card"

The Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce  and the Port Jefferson Free Library, which serves the Port Jefferson, Mt. Sinai and Miller Place school districts is partnering with the community businesses to create a program called, "Check - Out Discounts with Your Library Card".  This program, beginning September 1, 2011, will generate traffic to businesses by providing customers with either a discount or a small gift when they present their library card at time of purchase.

Our objective is to increase patronage of the business and heighten the business' community presence as a sponsor of the "Check - Out Discounts with Your Library Card" program.  This will be accomplished by the business providing an 'offer' to customers who present their Port Jefferson Free Library card at the time of purchase.  In return, the library and the PJ Chamber will publicize the partner's participation in the program in all the usual venues (such as the newsletter, Web site, posters and brochures) and provide promotional material for each participating business to display.

In addition there is a second opportunity for businesses to take advantage of.  In cooperation with the Long Island Railroad, Chamber members can also give the same 'offer' to LIRR customers, through the railroads advertised non-escorted train package.  With the presentation of their LIRR ticket stub, customers could then also enjoy the same discount that the PJ Library is promoting.  Please call the Chamber ASAP if you would like to participate 631-473-1414.

Summer is here.

Our busy season is here.  Increase of visitors to the Chamber is tenfold.  Reminding Chamber members to bring in any brochures or literature they have to help promote their business.
