Greetings!
They say that April Showers Bring May Flowers...With the "showers" we've had, we'll have more flowers next month than we know what to do with!
But April brought more than rain. It also brought Gateway's two primary fundraisers, and thanks to the hearty support of our friends, both were a lot of fun and very successful.
Event photos for Off the Wall are already up on our website - www.gway.org; and photos for the 13th Annual Gateway Classic will be posted shortly. |
Off the Wall
This was a great event at the Avon Theatre on April 7th. Every ticket holder walked away with either a matted and backed photograph or a bottle of "liquid art," and to determine which one, they played a game requiring cunning, strategy, and a bit of luck. To view all the event photos, please visit our brand-new website at www.gway.org; but here are just a few photos of our guests having fun.
Visit www.gway.org to see all the Off the Wall event photos.
Junior Board Update
The Team from Iberia Bank came out on top as the Grand Prize Winners of the 13th Annual Gateway Classic, held April 18th at Highland Park Golf Course. Perfect weather, lunch by Moe's Original Bar B Que, and a beautiful course made an afternoon of golf into a wonderful way to help kids.
Members of the winning Iberia Bank Team are (left to right) Gary Sheffer, Wes Quattlebaum, Jason Waters, and Nick Willis.
Thank you to all of the individuals, teams, and hole sponsors who contributed so much to this event and to Iberia Bank, Wallace Jordan, Centrix Pharmaceutical, Inc., HealthSouth, and Slate + Carter + Comer Attorneys at Law for their corporate support. Proceeds will allow the Junior Board to plan a year's worth of activities with the young people on our Residential Campus.
These teens have been removed from their homes with severe emotional and behavioral problems, often as a result of abuse and neglect. The Junior Board Members serve as mentors and role models as they provide educational, recreational, and just plain fun opportunities for Residents both on campus and in the community.
The most recent activity didn't cost the Junior Board a dime...but it was invaluable to the four young people who were selected from a group of volunteers to participate in the Soup Kitchen Project at Grace Episcopal Church in Woodlawn. The young people and Junior Board volunteers, led by Barvette Patterson prepared and served a meal to those less fortunate than themselves and learned a lesson about giving back as they cleaned pots and pans and wiped down tables.
