CALL ISSUED FOR SILVER BEAVER NOMINATIONS

silver beaver medal

The Silver Beaver Selection Committee has recently issued a call for nominations for the 2012 Silver Beaver Awards - the highest form of recognition that a local BSA council can bestow on adult volunteers for service to its youth. A very special recognition reception will be held on January 29, 2012, to honor the Council's 2012 Class of Silver Beavers and others.

Nomination forms can be obtained now at the Council office or by downloading them from the "Forms" page on its website at www.iac-bsa.org and by clicking HERE on an electronic version of this article. A person may be nominated only by his or her Scouting peers, as self-nominations are not accepted. It is extremely important for each nomination to contain complete and accurate information about the nominee, presented legibly on the proper form or attachments to it. Nominators should therefore research the relevant information about the person being proposed to present a comprehensive narrative for consideration by the Selection Committee.

The Selection Committee must undertake its review of the submitted nominations and make its recommendations in early November to allow sufficient time for their consideration by the National BSA Court of Honor, whose approval is required. The number of nominations that can be approved in any given year is based upon the number of registered units in the Council.

Therefore, nominations should be submitted at the earliest opportunity to the Silver Beaver Selection Committee, Istrouma Area Council, either (i) in person at 9644 Brookline Avenue, Baton Rouge, LA 70809, (ii) by U.S. mail sent to P.O. Box 66676, Baton Rouge, LA 70896 or (iii) by email sent to dgremillion@iac-bsa.org  or todd.conner@scouting.org. The deadline for submitting nominations for the Silver Beaver Class of 2012 is 5:00PM on Friday, November 4, 2011.

This is a great opportunity to ensure that deserving Scout Leaders are recognized for their dedication and outstanding service to the youth of our Council. You know someone who is worthy to receive this award. Please nominate them today!

For more information please contact Dayna Gremillion (Office Manager) or Todd Conner (Staff Advisor) at 225-926-2697 or email Dayna at dgremillion@iac-bsa.org or Todd at todd.conner@scouting.org.

Guidelines for Unit Self-Assessment and Action Planning Meeting

(To Be Conducted Semiannually)

Present at Meeting: Unit Key 3 (Unit Leader, Unit Committee Chair, Chartered

Organization Representative), Unit Commissioner, and District Executive

Purpose of Meeting (Use as the agenda for the meeting.):

* To evaluate the unit's progress toward achieving the Journey to Excellence Performance Recognition Award

* To review the unit's goals, successes, and vision for the coming year, including

a succession plan for future unit leadership

* To identify any areas of improvement-leadership, program, membership, youth and unit retention

* To determine any specific actions needed to be taken to assist with unit improvements and determine who will follow up on those actions

* To schedule any necessary follow-up to monitor progress

When to conduct meeting (semiannually):

* After the unit commissioner has visited the unit for the first time and six months prior to the annual charter renewal

* To review strengths and areas of improvement to help provide direction for needed support

* As needed when a problem arises

* When unit leadership changes

How should the arrangements for this meeting be made?

* The unit commissioner speaks to the unit leader during the first unit visit to schedule the meeting date, time, and location.

* The dialog should include:

- Approaching the unit leader after the meeting and requesting that a second

meeting be set up with the unit leader, the unit committee chair, and the chartered organization representative

- Setting the meeting, preferably at the leader's or the chair's home

- Asking them to complete the unit self-assessment form prior to the meeting

- Letting them know the visit will include a discussion of the self-assessment form and how the goals and vision of their unit's program can be supported

Why only the unit leader, unit chair, chartered organization representative, unit commissioner, and district executive?

* It provides a small group to openly analyze the program, their unit's needs, and steps to be taken to help resolve any issues.

* It helps open a dialog between the unit and the district. Once they meet and determine what needs to be done, others can be involved in helping determine in which direction to go and any potential improvements that can be identified.

What preparation should be made prior to the action planning meeting?

* Review the statistics of the unit available from the local council and the district team, especially looking at:

-JTE Unit status: Bronze, Silver, Gold

-Outdoor program participation

-Advancement reports

-Trained leadership status

-Youth Protection training

-Participation in district and council events

-Roundtable attendance

* Complete the unit self-assessment form after the visit to analyze observations and review the statistics gathered from the council/district prior to the action planning meeting. (The self-assessment form is designed to take the place of the commissioner worksheet previously used by commissioners.)

For assistance and to receive a copy of the unit self assessment form, contact your Commissioner or District Committee.

Hello from the Avondale Scout Reservation!

With a donation of time, labor, and materials from a Bogue Tuchenna District volunteer, the Coates Shotgun Range hi-lo boxes now have lights and electricity. This project took many hours of manual trenching, laying conduit and wiring, mounting lights and electrical boxes, and tying them in electrically on the Coates Shotgun Range. Many thanks to this BT volunteer for helping to make the program for the youth and adults at the ASR even better.

Fall Camp-o-rees, Cub-o-rees, and camp-outs are in abundance here at the Reservation. It is great to see everyone spending some quality time with their Scouting families. The Istrouma Area Council's Annual Clay Shoot is just around the corner as well and is a great opportunity for businesses and other great folks to come out and have fun, share in some Scout spirit, and give back to this program that we all love so much. We look forward to seeing all of your smiling faces here at the Reservation.

Thanks again,

The ASR Staff

Remember, the word "outing" is in "Scouting"!

Both our Fall Cuboree and Fall Camporee will be held the weekend of

October 21 - 23, 2011

The Cub Scout Cuboree will be held in the Summer Camp area of Camp Avondale.  Arrival and late registration will begin at 3:00pm on Friday afternoon.  As we're approaching Halloween we will once again participate in "Tent-or-Treat".  All Scouts and siblings are encouraged to bring their costumes and trick-or-treat from campsite to campsite.  Packs, be sure to bring enough candy so they don't trick you.

The Boy Scout Camporee will be held at Gillis Long Center in Carville, LA.  Troops, remember to submit a Tour Plan.  "Back to Basic's" will be the central activity and what better grounds to hold this event.

Everyone have a great time and a FANTASTIC "OUTING"!
