"Walk of Honor"
As many of you all are aware - last year we initiated a program called "Walk of Honor" - the goal being to donate funds to support Avondale Scout Reservation and receive an engraved brick that would be permanently place at Camp Avondale
Our committee is determining the location at camp for the "Walk of Honor" and the timeline for completion
My sincerest apologies for the delay and any inconvenience this has created - we will continued to up-date you as we make progress
For more information on this program - please call me at the Scout Office
Again, thank you for your support of Scouting -

2103 National Scout Jamboree
July 15-25, 2013
The Istrouma Area Council's (IAC) jamboree program is now accepting applications for scouts to attend the next National Scout Jamboree. The 2013 Jamboree will be the first held at The Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia, BSA's newest high adventure base. And, this will be the permanent home for the National Scout Jamboree.
New site, same proven fun and excitement- The 2013 Jamboree theme is "Go Big, Get Wild". You may want to visit Venture Valley or Mayhem Mountain. Daily activities will include rock climbing/repelling, whitewater rafting, shooting sports, aquatics, BMX, Mountain Boarding, Arena Shows, Buckskin Games, Highland Games, and much more.
To be eligible to attend the 2013 National Scout Jamboree, a scout must be at least 12 years of age by July 15, 2013, or have completed the 6th grade, but not have reached his 18th birthday by July 25, 2013. The Scout must also be at least First Class and be approved by his unit leader and the IAC.
To begin the application process, the scout must first go with his parents to the 2013 National Scout Jamboree website at www.bsajamboree.org and register online. Then, the Scout and parent must complete an IAC jamboree application and return it to the Scout Office with a $250 deposit. Be a part of the first scouts to attend jamboree at The Summit!

Commissioner Corner
Its that time of year - Outdoor Program
Outdoor adventure is the promise made to boys when they join Scouting. Boys yearn for outdoor programs that stir their imagination and interest.
In the outdoors, boys have opportunities to acquire skills that make them more self-reliant. They can explore canoe and hiking trails and complete challenges they first thought were beyond their ability. Attributes of good character become part of a boy as he learns to cooperate to meet outdoor challenges that may include extreme weather, difficult trails and portages, and dealing with nature's unexpected circumstances. Scouts plan and carry out activities with thoughtful guidance from their Scoutmaster and other adult leaders. Good youth leadership, communication, and teamwork enable them to achieve goals they have set for themselves, their patrol or squad, and their troop or team.
Learning by doing is a hallmark of outdoor education. Unit meetings offer information and knowledge used on outdoor adventures each month throughout the year. A leader may describe and demonstrate a Scouting skill at a meeting, but the way Scouts truly learn outdoor skills is to do it themselves on a troop outing.
If you are a leader in Scouting or an interested parent, take advantage of Scouting's outdoor training programs for registered adults. You learn how to provide a quality, fun, and safe outdoor experience for our youth. For more information, contact your Unit Commissioner.

Venturing? Jamboree? Coed?
For the first time in the history of the National Scout Jamboree, Venturing Crews are invited to participate in the 2013 Jamboree being held July 15-25, 2013, at BSA's new Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia. Also for the first time, coed crews are welcome. The Istrouma Area Council (IAC) has reserved a coed crew for 36 Venturers. Four Advisors will accompany this group, which will travel to the jamboree as a part of the IAC jamboree contingent.
In addition to all of the other activities, check out the Technical Climbing at New River Gorge, whitewater rafting, and special Venturing only pistol shooting.
Venturing eligibility includes requirements that crew members be registered with a BSA Venturing Crew, have graduated the 8th grade or be at least 14 years of age by July 15, 2013, but have not reached their 21st birthday by July 24, 2013. Applicants must be approved by their unit leader and IAC.
To begin the application process, each crew member must first with parents go to the 2013 National Scout Jamboree website at www.bsajamboree.org/ and register online. Then, they must together complete an IAC jamboree application and return it to the Scout Office with a $250 deposit.
Join this select group for this historical trip and make your application today!
For more information, contact Roslyn Davidson at the Scout Office at 225 926-2697 or rdavidson@iac-bsa.org.

 Camping News
Avondale Society
Thanks to the donation of an operator and a mini-excavator from A&B Electric for a day, one water leak supplying the Eagle's Nest Bath House on Camp McGee is fixed. The sink hole on Camp Tigator at Perkins' Lodge is fixed also.
Weather is getting cooler, so grab your tents and some camp grub and head out to Avondale! Remember to fill out your permits and send them in early because Camp fills fast in the Fall.
If you're looking for a closer camping experience to Baton Rouge, don't forget about the Carruth Scout Preserve in Port Allen.
For more information on both properties, give us a call at (225) 683-3489.
See you all here, there, or anywhere as long as you're Scouting and having fun!!!
Thanks again,
The ASR Staff
