A Message From Pastor Paul
God's gifts
sometimes come to us at the most incredible times. I needed to complete
the second phase of Intentional Interim Ministry training as soon as
possible; a session took place near Philadelphia from September 13 to 17. I attended and earned 34 contact hours of continuing education. Then the Upstate New York Synod Ministerium met at the Notre Dame Retreat Center near Canandaigua, New York, from September 20 to 23. The presenter was Dr. Craig Satterlee, a former pastor in upstate New York and now a professor at the Lutheran School of Theology
in Chicago. For eight hours, he spoke about "Change and Transition in
Ministry." Well, I have absorbed so much useful information on interim
ministry I may now be equipped for 10 or 12 congregational interims!
However, all this knowledge means nothing unless it's used appropriately at Christ the King.
For me, to use the most relevant parts of my learning in the most suitable
ways, I need to listen more. Specifically, I need to listen more to all
of you.
You are the ones who know how it feels to have Pastors Mark and Nadine retire, the emptiness since their departure. You know the anxiety and other feelings that this change has brought. You know
the angst of uncertainty about the future. You even know a lot about
what we need to do towards the calling of new pastoral leadership
So you are my teachers. I will learn from you. I
want to hear your sorrows and joys, your fears and hopes, your wisdom
and even a few dumb thoughts about our interim situation and our
transition to a new beginning.
At
this time, the only thing I know for sure is that Christ the King is
still here. I mean that both the congregation and Jesus are still alive. I
also know from personal experience that Jesus never abandons his people
without support and guidance to carry on God's mission.

Wednesday Bible Study is dedicating this year's donations to our work camp volunteers. Let's hear it for small group power!
Jesus and Friends' Worm Compost Station Now Upstairs!
On Rally Day we learned about worms being great recyclers. Now we
get to see them be stewards of God's creation - just like us. They're making a fertile soil that can grow healthful vegetables
and beautiful flowers. To see our compost station, come upstairs anytime and get directions to make your own at home! |

"Sermon Blurbs" for September and October
Sept. 26 "SCRIPTURE PLUS"
In the
parable of the rich man and poor Lazarus in Luke 16;19-31, Father
Abraham makes the point that holy scripture is sufficient and, at the
same time, even more is given by God.
Oct. 3 "WHO'S IN CHARGE?"
Previously Jesus had told the disciples a parable in which
the master served the servants. The parable in Luke 17:5-10 is a
correction to any misunderstanding that Jesus' followers might have.
Oct. 10 "THANKS BE TO GOD"
One out of ten of the cleansed lepers thanks to Jesus in Luke 17:11-19. Is ten percent the norm for human thanksgiving?
Oct. 17 "NAGGING PRAYER"
In
Luke 18:1-8 Jesus presents a nagging woman as a role model for the
prayer of disciples. What does this model tell us about our own prayer
life and the God who hears our prayers?
Oct. 24 "RECEIVING RIGHTEOUSNESS"
In
Luke 18:9-14, the parable of the tax collector and the Pharisee
demonstrates that righteousness is not something achieved; rather, it
is something received.
Oct. 31 "LUTHER AT WARTBURG" Impersonators
of historical persons are popular. Today an impersonator of Martin
Luther tells about his stay at Wartburg Castle. The Gospel for
Reformation Day is John 8:31-36.
