A Message From
Pastor Paul

As the Apostle Paul thanked God for the congregation in Philippi, so I thank God for Christ the King in Vestal.  You have very graciously welcomed my wife Ann and me.  In less than two weeks, we have begun to feel comfortable among you.  I still don't know where the light switches are - and at the same time - feel at ease with you.

The staff has warmly welcomed me.  They are teaching me what they do and what I need to do.  Their operative words are something like, "This is how we've done it, what would you like to do?"  I can work with this attitude.

The lay leaders have also graciously received me.  In all the congregations I've served, the September congregational council meeting ranks #1 as the best "first" council meetings that I've experienced.  The meeting was clearly a gathering of Christians who loved and cared for one another, and for the world.  Clearly, Christ was the center of that meeting.

The deacons are training me in the ways of worship at Christ the King.  The Transition Team is on task and on schedule for this point on the transition time line.

And Rally Day was a day to remember!  The welcome brunch was a really "feel good" event for Ann and me.  I wish I could have eaten more!  I walked around and observed the educational activities going on; I saw significant activities helping young Christians grow in their relationship with Christ and one another. There was also strong adult leadership in those classes.

And worship in both services was a mountain top experience.  Your responses to the parable of the lost sheep showed me that you knew the gospel of Christ and rejoice in Him.  Thanks be to God!

Wednesday Bible Study to help Work Camp Youth

After years of donating money to families in Africa, the Wednesday Bible Study is dedicating this year's donations to our work camp volunteers. Let's hear it for small group power!

Jesus and Friends' Worm Compost Station Now Upstairs!

On Rally Day we learned about worms being great recyclers. Now we get to see them be stewards of God's creation - just like us.  They're making a fertile soil that can grow healthful vegetables and beautiful flowers.  To see our compost station, come upstairs anytime and get directions to make your own at home!

The Garage Sale was a Great Success!  Thank you to everyone who donated items to sell, purchased items, and/or volunteered their time to pick up items, set up, work the sale, and clean up afterwards. It was A LOT of work, with some fun and God sightings mixed in too.  All in all, we raised $1,095.  This means Thrivent will provide $500 in supplemental funds.  Huge thanks to the Southern Tier Chapter of Thrivent for once again supporting the CTK Work Campers' fundraising efforts!

"Sermon Blurbs" for September and October

Sept. 19  "EXTRAORDINARY MERCY"

Of all Jesus' parables, the parable in Luke 16:1-13 is probably the most difficult to understand. What does it mean?  Can you find its  mercy and faith?

Sept. 26 "SCRIPTURE PLUS"

In the parable of the rich man and poor Lazarus in Luke 16;19-31, Father Abraham makes the point that holy scripture is sufficient and, at the same time, even more is given by God.

Oct. 3 "WHO'S IN CHARGE?"

Previously Jesus had told the disciples a parable in which the master served the servants. The parable in Luke 17:5-10 is a correction to any misunderstanding that Jesus' followers might have.

Oct. 10 "THANKS BE TO GOD"

One out of ten of the cleansed lepers thanks to Jesus in Luke 17:11-19. Is ten percent the norm for human thanksgiving?

Oct. 17 "NAGGING PRAYER"

In Luke 18:1-8 Jesus presents a nagging woman as a role model for the prayer of disciples. What does this model tell us about our own prayer life and the God who hears our prayers?

Oct. 24 "RECEIVING RIGHTEOUSNESS"

In Luke 18:9-14, the parable of the tax collector and the Pharisee demonstrates that righteousness is not something achieved; rather, it is something received.

Oct. 31 "LUTHER AT WARTBURG"

Impersonators of historical persons are popular. Today an impersonator of Martin Luther tells about his stay at Wartburg Castle. The Gospel for Reformation Day is John 8:31-36.

OUR MISSION
