Stained Glass WindowA Message from Pastor Paul

I
have a confession: I am a storyteller.  You'll discover that soon enough anyway.  I was born into a storytelling family; I had no choice.  My father's stories of hunting squirrels or rabbits were as exciting as hunting lions and tigers and bears.  My mother's stories about downtown Columbus, Indiana, where she worked as a store clerk, made me think that downtown was the most happening place around.  And at Uncle Karl's Sinclair gas station, full service included a story or two - you couldn't get in and out in less than twenty minutes, and didn't want to when you had to!

I perceive events in my life as parts of a narrative, and in my mind I organize those events in the form of story.  So storytelling is my natural way of speaking.  Sometimes, I force myself out of a story to say something.

My story and your story intersect with Christ's story.  We are all baptized into Christ's death and resurrection.  We all share human life with Jesus.  Ultimately, there is only one story in our lives told with an infinite number of variations - the story of God with us.  God is so creative we'll never be able to say, "I've heard it all."

About twenty years ago - after almost twenty years of pastoral ministry - I began to think I've heard it all.  Then I heard a story from two people unlike anything heard before, as incredible as the story of Jesus' own life, death, and resurrection.  Since then my ears have been opened to hear God's story in the various stories of His people.
The ELCA called on Christ the King to help fight World Hunger,
and we responded with a loud YES!

by having our first annual CTK TALENT SHOW/POTLUCK DINNER.  In the July/August edition of Seeds of the Parish, Lutheran Parishes were encouraged to hold potlucks and combat hunger.  When we bring a dish to pass and give a free-will offering on Thursday, October 14, the CTK family will affect those hungry, both near and far.  Thrivent will supplement all donations.  Sign up for the talent show as a family or showcase your own talent in a relaxed atmosphere.  Enjoy food, fun, and fellowship!  One congregation member will demonstrate her advanced painting skills. What are your talents?  Jim Ford will offer piano accompaniment, if needed.  A fun night for all ages is promised!  Families, friends, and folks from Redeemer Lutheran will also join us.  SIGN UP SHEETS are in the entrance hall.  Please fill out the appropriate form so we have a loose idea of who is coming and/or performing.
THE SCHEDULE - Thursday, October 14, upstairs in the Fellowship Hall.  The ovens will be available.  Doors open at 5:30 PM.  Dinner starts at 6, the show starts at 6:15 while we eat. At 7:30, we break up and head home.  Questions?  Ideas?  Contact Julie Sifert at 785-3697 or jsifert@stny.rr.com.

"Sermon Blurbs" for September and October

Sept. 12  "REPENTENT PEOPLE REJOICE"

The two parables in Luke 15:1-10 relate to common events that were familiar to the first century audiences of Jesus, but His religious symbolism probably shocked the listeners.

Sept. 19  "EXTRAORDINARY MERCY"

Of all Jesus' parables, the parable in Luke 16:1-13 is probably the most difficult to understand. What does it mean?  Can you find its  mercy and faith?

Sept. 26 "SCRIPTURE PLUS"

In the parable of the rich man and poor Lazarus in Luke 16;19-31, Father Abraham makes the point that holy scripture is sufficient and, at the same time, even more is given by God.

Oct. 3 "WHO'S IN CHARGE?"

Previously Jesus had told the disciples a parable in which the master served the servants. The parable in Luke 17:5-10 is a correction to any misunderstanding that Jesus'
followers might have.

Oct. 10 THANKS BE TO GOD"

One out of ten of the cleansed lepers thanks to Jesus in Luke 17:11-19. Is ten percent the norm for human thanksgiving?

Oct. 17 "NAGGING PRAYER"

In Luke 18:1-8 Jesus presents a nagging woman as a role model for the prayer of disciples. What does this model tell us about our own prayer life and the God who hears our prayers?

Oct. 24 "RECEIVING RIGHTEOUSNESS"

In Luke 18:9-14, the parable of the tax collector and the Pharisee demonstrates that righteousness is not something achieved; rather, it is something received.

Oct. 31 "LUTHER AT WARTBURG"

Impersonators of historical persons are popular. Today an impersonator of Martin Luther tells about his stay at Wartburg Castle. The Gospel for Reformation Day is John 8:31-36.
