Good Morning!
It is Cinco de Mayo!
This week we continue our month of focus on Compassion, Community and Justice with special attention to the benefit coming up on May 21 for New Day for Children. If you still need tickets to this event, please contact the New Day Benefit email address newdayforchildrenbenefit@gmail.com as soon as possible. In fact, there are a set of deadlines listed below so you will know exactly what is happening with this event. We have also included some resources to help you invite your friends and family to this event. Check them out, we hope they are helpful to you!
As the days get longer and there are more opportunities to be outside, there will be lots to do as a church body and just in fellowship with one another. We hope you can join us! |
Compassion, Community and Justice Month May 1-31 Throughout the month of May, New Life will be highlighting the ministries to which the church has been called, as well as ministries where members of the community are giving their time, talents and treasures to serve our community. There are nearly a dozen local agencies that are currently being served either directly by New Life or by its congregation! There will be posters on display showing all of the organizations served by members and friends of New Life. Individuals from these organizations will be given opportunity to share with the community what the organization does and how New Life has been involved. Pastor Kevin will be preaching on Compassion and Community Justice issues in each of his sermons for the month. And Pastor Adam will be bringing an Outreach message to the community as we seek to deepen our involvement serving those in need throughout San Jose and the greater world community. |
New Life Mommies
New Life has started a small group for mommies! All moms with babies and young children are invited on Friday, May 7 at 10:30am to our next gathering! We will meet at Supriya Sargunaraj's house for a time of conversation and continued planning for this new group. We will be starting a book to use as our guide, but mostly this will be a time of fellowship for moms and kids!
This small group is not just for New Life mommies. Have a friend who is home with young children? Invite her! We'd love to meet her and share some time together!
Hope to see you there!

| New Day for Children Benefit Resources
Many people have asked "How can I invite my friends to this event?" It is a difficult subject to think about, and although the cause is so worthwhile, it can be hard to talk about. We wanted to give you a little template to send to your friends and family that might help as you invite people who should know what is happening with trafficking here in the Bay Area. We are also including links to the New Day for Children invitation and donation letter here so you can include these with your email to your friends. Feel free to copy the text below and edit as you see fit:

Hi On Friday, May 21, my church is hosting a Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction for New Day for Children at the Corinthian Grand Ballroom/San Jose Athletic Club in downtown San Jose. Recently, we began to learn more about the trafficking of young girls (ages 10-18) that happens here in the Bay Area, particularly young girls being "sold" into prostitution. We wanted to do something tangible to help these girls, so we have decided to throw a fundraising dinner for a new school and rescue group, New Day for Children, that is just starting in Oakland. In fact, New Day was not planning to open until the Fall, but the Oakland Police and DA office have already given them two young girls to care for. New Day for Children will be a school, counseling setting and respite home for the girls who are rescued out of slavery. They will receive education as well as assistance through social services, intensive therapy, and the compassion and love they so desperately need. If you know of others who might be interested, please pass along the invitation. To learn more about New Day for Children, visit http://newdayforchildren.com/homeand to see exactly what is happening here in California, please look at the videos posted from San Diego http://newdayforchildren.com/trafficking_video and here in the Bay Area http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wa_Wo4hbh50 I know this is a difficult topic, but I hope you'll consider attending. The tickets are $29--for the buffet dinner at the Corinthian Club (including their chocolate fondue fountain). We'll have a cash bar. We're also collecting donations for our Silent Auction. It'll be a nice event -- after work you can come over to the Club, have dinner, hear about what's happening and make a difference in the lives of young girls. Please let me know if you would like to come and I'll get you a ticket(s). Thanks!

Helping Willow Glen Middle School To be Scheduled We have an opportunity for a couple of folks who know how to sand and paint to help Willow Glen Middle School with a project that has no funding this year. There are a few benches that are old and weathered and in need of a sand and stain near the main quad of the school, and with budget cuts, this won't get done. Mr. Molina asked back in November if New Life might be able to help fix these up for the school. And then the rain came! So, now that we are hopefully near the end of the rains, I'd like to ask for a couple of helpers on a Saturday morning or even during the week who can do this work. A sander and all the supplies will be provided and New Life will coordinate access to power with the school. |
Baby Shower! June 5 Emily McGhee will soon be having her baby and we want to help her get ready! Please plan to join us on Saturday, June 5th from 10am-Noon at Debbie Munns home! More details will be coming, but if you have questions or want to help, please contact Sue Dickey (408/205-0518 ). |
