Sabbatical Reflections

The Ornamental Horticulture Department has been working on fundraising to build a second greenhouse on our site at Cuyamaca College since 1987, but the absence of an electrical power source near the site has been a major obstacle. My sabbatical during the 2011 spring semester provided the time and opportunity to establish the power requirements, site constraints, and functional characteristics of a grid-neutral, solar-powered greenhouse. Sabbatical Reflections   sabbaticalsabbatical-rail

By Brad Monroe

sab-bat-i-cal, noun

Leave time granted to a professor after serving for six or seven years on the same faculty. Its purpose is to give an extended period of time for concentrated study.

The Ornamental Horticulture Department has been working on fundraising to build a second greenhouse on our site at Cuyamaca College since 1987. Through donations and grants, we have been able to set aside nearly $100,000 for this project. One major obstacle has always been the absence of an electrical power source near the site for the new greenhouse. The cost of installing electrical power and the required transformer has been a major factor in prohibiting its construction. With the improvements in solar power over the past 20 years, it was our hope that a combination of solar power and natural gas, available at the site, would allow us to finally construct our greenhouse.

My sabbatical during the 2011 spring semester provided the time and opportunity to establish the power requirements, site constraints, and functional characteristics of a grid-neutral, solar-powered greenhouse. My original thoughts were to incorporate the new thin-film technology in which glass panels that transmit sunlight and generate electricity could be installed. The sabbatical provided the time for further investigation and onsite observation of some options. I met with solar technology professionals, worked with a solar installation class on campus, traveled abroad to see other installations, and did additional research locally and online. The conclusion was that it would be possible at our site, but using more traditional solar panels instead of thin film would be more practical and cheaper.

The sabbatical also allowed me time to visit horticulture sites in Spain, Portugal, and Italy. In total, I estimate during the 120+ days traveling here and abroad, I visited over 120 horticultural and solar installation sites. Below are a few photos of sites on my travels.

The photos included here show a solar "greenhouse" -- actually used as the reception area -- at a hospital outside Florence, Italy. The structure uses thin film that transmits light and generates electricity. In one photo you can see me with a hospital official, and the sign in the background gives real-time readouts on the electricity generated.

At a nursery in northern Italy, shown below, solar panels are being installed. The nursery, near Lugano, Switzerland, is building this structure for both its electrical power needs and to sell 75% of the power into the electrical power grid. The nursery's installation is interesting in that the panels' angle can be adjusted throughout the year as the angle of the sun changes.

I am grateful for the opportunity the sabbatical provided for study here and abroad. The knowledge gained will be incorporated into our classes, and with some additional funding, we may be able to build our second greenhouse.

By Don Schultz

On May 12 the Cuyamaca College Botanical Society hosted its 30th Annual Scholarship and Awards Dinner at the Holiday Inn on the Bay in San Diego.

Much has changed in the 30 years since the first event when $600 was awarded to just a few students. Thanks to the continuing generous donations from the OH Department's support base of business partners, alumni and others, this year a total of $29,500 was awarded to 46 students.

CCBS President Jay Davis hosted the festivities, and OH instructor Karen Sumek presented the scholarships. We were grateful to have in attendance Cuyamaca College Interim President Bob Garber, Vice President of Instruction Robin Steinbeck, Division ll Dean Danene Brown and Cuyamaca College Foundation President Sharon Bullard. Even OH Department Chairman Brad Monroe, who was on sabbatical at the time, made an appearance via Skype from his hotel room in Italy. Again, thanks to all of the scholarship donors for their generous support.

Don Schultz is a full-time instructor in the Ornamental Horticulture Department.
