Service of the Spirit AGAIN February 24!

We had a fabulous Service of the Spirit at the beginning of January with our special guests - Cantorial student Shoshana Abrams and our own Tal Benatar. We ended up with almost 100 people for the service and the dinner - and an unusually diverse crowd, from young to old, and including a number of people from the Columbus Jewish deaf community. It was the place to be - and I hope it will be again on February 24!   As of now, everyone is invited to the service, but the RSVPs for the dinner are closed.

D'var Torah

Parashat Trumah, our Torah portion this week, consists of the instructions given to the Children of Israel for the construction of the Tabernacle.  This structure was to be used by the people as a place of worship during the years of wandering in the wilderness.

Although the materials and skills needed for the construction are given as commandments, the text of the Torah indicates that each individual's participation in the provision of supplies and effort was voluntary.  As we find out when the construction actually began (described in a few weeks at the end of Exodus), the people were not shy about giving; in fact, Moses had to tell the people to stop bringing materials as there was already too much.

This story presents an interesting parallel.  Synagogue leaders today know well what is needed to make a congregation successful; there are certain requisites ("commandments") that define what a synagogue is.  As in ancient days, the resources to make it all happen are a result of individual's and family's volunteerism and generosity.  We cannot require anyone to give; the modern-day Jewish community is completely voluntary.  When we look at it in this light, it is quite incredible that our community is as strong and vibrant as it is.  Despite many competing interests, modern-day Jews continue to support the institutions and efforts of our people.  Too often we forget just how wonderful this is...and sometimes we forget that this may not always be the case.  We must always ensure that members of the Jewish community sense the value of being Jewish and doing Jewish things.  In the 21st Century this is a challenge, but our history teaches that the generosity of our people cannot be underestimated.  Thanks to all who have supported the Jewish world and those who continue to do so every day.

Rabbi Michael Ungar

Jewish Joke of the Week

A wealthy Jewish man buys a fabulous home in Beverly Hills.  He brings in a local workman to decorate the place. When the job is finished, the homeowner is delighted, but realizes that he's forgotten to put mezuzahs on the doors. He goes out and buys 50 Mezuzahs and asks the decorator to place them on the right hand side of each door except bathrooms and kitchens. He's really worried that the decorator will chip the paint work or won't put them up correctly. However, when he comes back a few hours
later, he sees that the job has been carried out to his entire satisfaction. He's so pleased that he gives the decorator a bonus.
As the decorator is walking out of the door he says,

"Glad you're happy with the job. By the way, I took out all the warranties in the little boxes and left them on the table for you!"

No Jew Goes Hungry Project
Our Social Action Committee has pledged to collect 300 boxes of Matzah and 100 $10 Gift Certificates for kosher meat at Kroger to help needy families in our Jewish community. Have you missed the collection box for the Food Pantry?

It is now located in the alcove near the Katz Chapel.   The pantry always needs: (with emphasis on non-perishable items) Canned and boxed foods that contain protein, especially items that can make a meal, e.g. stews, chunky soups, "helper" type items that need one thing added, e.g. tuna helper, baby foods, small containers of coffee, tea, hot chocolate, etc. There is a special need for peanut butter, as the price has increased due to shortages from a recent poor peanut harvest.  The pantry cannot distribute food items that have passed their expiration date.  We are also collecting personal care items, toiletries, etc. (no prescription medications) to be used at shelters. There is a separate box for those items in the alcove.  Please remember that personal hygiene items cannot be purchased with food stamps.

Queen Esther Wore Her Torah Fund Pin...How About YOU?

Rumor has it that Queen Esther's beauty wasn't the only thing that caught King Ahashverosh's eye...It was the shiny Torah Fund Pin she received for being a Benefactor.  OK, it's almost Purim and we're just kidding, but we're sure that if Esther were around today, she'd be wearing her pin. How about you? Sisterhood welcomes Torah Fund contributions at all levels, but if you contribute a minimum of $180, you'll receive this year's "Hiddur Mitzvah"-themed pin. For more information about becoming a Benefactor, please contact Bonnie Bloom or Jan Lyddon.

And don't forget, Torah Fund Cards for all occasions are on sale in the Sisterhood Gift Shop.

Calling all Torah readers!  The Men's Club wants you to have your own yad!  When you have read 10 times we will present you with a yad designed by Israeli Judaica artist Yair Emanuel. Keep track of your readings by placing a star next to your name in the book by the entrance in the sanctuary. For more information, contact Dale Levy at dlevy82@gmail.com.  If you wish to sign up to read Torah, contact Jerry Sigal of the Yad Squad at jerrysigal@columbus.rr.com.

Chevra Kadisha
The TI Chevra Kadisha is in need to additional volunteers.  Members participate in the ritual preparation (Taharah) of the body of a deceased member of our congregation.  It consists primarily of bathing the body, then placing the burial garments on the body.  Prayers are read while the Taharah is being performed. Participation is one of the greatest mitzvot that one can perform, as the departed cannot thank those who participate in this ritual.  No medical knowledge is necessary, and one is part of a pool of people from which 5 individuals participate at a time.  The time commitment is minimal and no medical knowledge is required.  Men only participate in a Taharah for a male, and women only in Taharah for a female.

Electronic Statements are Now Available!
Did you know you now have the ability to receive your billing statement and yahrzeit notices electronically? Help us reduce paper and postage while doing your part for the environment at the same time.  Contact Cheryl Laver, Finance Manager, at claver@tiferethisrael.org and we'll make it happen.  Of course, if we don't already have your email address, we certainly want that too.

Kroger Program - Help Us Make Some Gelt!
Kroger is giving away up to $5 million to non-profit organization this year.  Let's earn our share -- it won't cost you a dime!  We have the potential to earn thousands of dollars for the synagogue.  We raised a little over $6,000 this past fiscal year, and we could easily TRIPLE that amount.  Detailed instructions are online at www.krogercommunityrewards.com or call Danny Bromberg at 237-7270.  If you already enrolled, you will need to re-enroll after April 1 of each year.
