D'var Torah
Parashat Beshallach chronicles the Israelites' departure from Egypt and crossing of the Red Sea. After crossing on dry land and watching the Egyptian charioteers drown in the sea, the people sing a song of praise and celebration.
Of course, then reality sets in and the kvetching begins. While slavery may not have been the ideal situation, it was a condition to which the people were accustomed. They knew what to expect and there was a certain level of security in that.
Freedom, on the other hand, contained many unknowns. What kind of leader would Moses be? What would they eat and drink? What would God's role be in their future? We look at the text and see the people complaining, but we must remember the enormity of the adjustment our ancestors were being asked to make. This has parallels in our own lives. Change is a constant in our lives; we often make choices (or have them made for us) that push us into the unknown; we may not know how to handle it all, and it takes a while to adjust. What we see over the course of the history of the Torah is the growth and maturation of our people; this continues into the later periods of our history as well. In truth, we are always headed into an uncertain future. The best we can do is try to understand ourselves and what God expects of us. In doing so, we can help to mold the secure and glorious future we hope to create.

Jewish Joke of the Week
Saul Epstein was taking an oral exam in his English as a Second Language class. He was asked to spell "cultivate," and he spelled it correctly. He was then asked to use the word in a sentence, and, with a big smile, responded: "Last vinter on a very cold day, I vas vaiting for a bus, but it vas too cultivate, so I took the subvay home."

Social Action
Have you missed the collection box for the Food Pantry?
It is now located in the alcove near the Katz Chapel. The pantry always needs: (with emphasis on non-perishable items) Canned and boxed foods that contain protein, especially items that can make a meal, e.g. stews, chunky soups, "helper" type items that need one thing added, e.g. tuna helper, baby foods, small containers of coffee, tea, hot chocolate, etc. There is a special need for peanut butter, as the price has increased due to shortages from a recent poor peanut harvest. The pantry cannot distribute food items that have passed their expiration date. We are also collecting personal care items, toiletries, etc. (no prescription medications) to be used at shelters. There is a separate box for those items in the alcove. Please remember that personal hygiene items cannot be purchased with food stamps.

If you could donate, we need: soap, shampoo, popcorn packets, candy, pop tarts, sun block, batteries, or protein bars. I have a box in the atrium and another in the school office for collection. It would be great to have your help with this project. Thanks!

Tu B'Shevat Seder
Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 6:00 pm Hazak will be hosting a Tu B'Shevat Seder right after Minyan. A Tu B'Shevat seder is similar to a Passover seder. There are 4 questions, there are 4 cups of wine, and we follow along in the haggadah. Instead of celebrating the exodus from Egypt, however, Tu B'Shevat celebrates the new year of trees. Volunteers are needed to help us celebrate! Please contact Judy Uhrman (614-863-0358 or artandjudy@aol.com) or Susie Covensky (614-451-6871 or scovensky@columbus.rr.com) for more information!

Chevra Kadisha
The TI Chevra Kadisha is in need to additional volunteers. Members participate in the ritual preparation (Taharah) of the body of a deceased member of our congregation. It consists primarily of bathing the body, then placing the burial garments on the body. Prayers are read while the Taharah is being performed. Participation is one of the greatest mitzvot that one can perform, as the departed cannot thank those who participate in this ritual. No medical knowledge is necessary, and one is part of a pool of people from which 5 individuals participate at a time. The time commitment is minimal and no medical knowledge is required. Men only participate in a Taharah for a male, and women only in Taharah for a female.
Electronic Statements are Now Available!
Did you know you now have the ability to receive your billing statement and yahrzeit notices electronically? Help us reduce paper and postage while doing your part for the environment at the same time. Contact Cheryl Laver, Finance Manager, at claver@tiferethisrael.org and we'll make it happen. Of course, if we don't already have your email address, we certainly want that too.
Kroger Program - Help Us Make Some Gelt!
Kroger is giving away up to $5 million to non-profit organization this year. Let's earn our share -- it won't cost you a dime! We have the potential to earn thousands of dollars for the synagogue. We raised a little over $6,000 this past fiscal year, and we could easily TRIPLE that amount. Detailed instructions are online at www.krogercommunityrewards.com or call Danny Bromberg at 237-7270. If you already enrolled, you will need to re-enroll after April 1 of each year.
