TRANSMISSION MOUNTS... WHAT'S THE RIGHT CHOICE?

There are numerous choices available for transmission mounts, but what mount is right to use?  Common choices include OEM rubber mounts, aftermarket polyurethane mounts, and solid metal mounts.  An OEM rubber mount will work in most any application, and offers good insulation from vibration as well as plenty of deflection to accommodate chassis flex.  The downfall of a rubber mount is lack of overall strength and longevity.  Rubber mounts break relatively easily, especially when used in racing and competition applications.  Rubber also has a tendency to dry rot, leading to shorter life span, especially in dry climates.  Polyurethane mounts offer many of the same features of a rubber mount, but with greatly increased strength and longevity.  Polyurethane offers an extremely long life span.  Popular designs feature a steel interlocking mechanism built into the mount which prevents the mount from breaking or separating, even in abusive environments.  A solid metal mount is always the wrong choice.  Chassis flex and deflection can create binding in the drivetrain, and when using a solid mount, this binding will result in breakage of the transmission extension housing where the mount joins the transmission to the chassis crossmember.  We have several choices available in polyurethane mounts at Hughes Performance, and are ready to assist you with any of your automatic transmission needs
