I'm often asked what advice would I give a racer when selecting a transmission and converter for his racecar. The answer is that your type of racing and driving style has a lot to do with car set-up. A less aggressive converter or gear selection will soften the cars launch and increase down track traction. This all leads to consistency. An aggressive hard hitting converter might run 1-2 MPH faster, but will not repeat as well. My personal recommendation is a hard hit, soft transition spreagless converter. This will plant the tire well and not over-power the track surface. Running a spragless converter will enhance consistency by eliminating one more variable, nothing to skid or slip. Your gear ratio can be determined by the weight of the car, engine size, tire size and preferred SLR (starting line ratio), all important for reaction time and an impressive, consistent launch. Performance engines are modified to produce more horsepower and torque and it's essential to know what the peak torque of your engine is to match the stall speed of ratio of the torque converter with the engine's power curve.
