Greetings!

Kathy Jex ADV

2011-2012
AdClub President

"Weak advertising tells people what you want them to know. Strong advertising gets people to conclude what you want them to know." - Ed McCabe

The quote above is from real-life mad man Ed McCabe, a Madison Avenue pioneer in the 60s and 70s. It's from an article from the New York Times that I read about this veteran advertiser who created some brilliant brand images back when 3 martini lunches were the norm. Brands like Volvo, Hebrew National Hot Dogs and Perdue Chicken, that live on with the brands that were built in part by Ed McCabe's words.

Things have changed a lot since those cocktail and tobacco fueled days, but the basic responsibility of helping to shape a brand image for our client has not changed. Sure, we have different tools in our kit now, but the heart and soul of the creative individual is still the driving force in successful advertising and marketing. What fun to watch the problem solving of the creative team at Sterling Cooper Draper and Price Sunday night in the long-awaited premiere of Mad Men, with their "bean ballet" and pantyhose slogans.

And speaking of new ways to do things, AdBID is going digital! The annual fundraiser for AdClub will be easier than ever with on-line bidding only for your favorite advertising packages and items. We're collecting items to auction like media packages, creative services, printing, photography, web design, or whatever you do to help your clients achieve their marketing goals. We'll also accept gift certificates to area restaurants, sports, retail emporiums, and visitor attractions. As always, proceeds will help us to continue to bring you quality programs and events, as well as scholarships for the next generation of mad men. Click here  for all the information on donating and bidding on the new and improved AdBID 2012.

Don't have anything but time to donate? Great! We need new candidates for the Board of Governors, and the main requirement is a few hours of your time each month. Board membership adds a whole new dimension to AdClub membership. It's a chance to get to know a diverse group of like-minded individuals, advance your career with networking and new business connections, and have a lot of fun in the meantime. And you get the joy of guiding this 103 year old Club into the future. Make your mark in the local advertising scene and become part of the Board of Governors. Our fiscal year ends on June 30, so contact Patty for information and details.

Congratulations to Hart and Madhouse for their District 5 Gold and Silver ADDY Awards, and to Adams Street Publishing, Eric Eggly Photography, Level 2 Audio and Sheroian Associates for their Silver ADDY Awards. Next the Nationals!

And finally, a reminder to get your AdBID donations together and take some time to enjoy the early spring weather. I'll see you at The Toledo Club on April 18!

Thread
We're moving, we're growing, we're shaking the trees - and our bushel of oranges just got bigger!

Thread Marketing Group is pleased to announce a strategic partnership with FLS Marketing - creating one of the largest integrated full-service agencies in the Region.

The firm will operate as Thread Marketing Group with a separately branded division called the FLS Group, providing public affairs, issue management and political consulting. The team will occupy the new digs at 4635 West Alexis Road in Toledo. The building brings together Thread and FLS Group under one roof along with one other Thread division - eMerge - and a jointly-owned LLC venture, VIS Alliance.

Thread CEO Joe Sharp and President Judy McFarland will lead the new firm. Mark Luetke, president of FLS Marketing will continue as president of the FLS Group.

"The partnership brings extensive experience in both traditional and digital media to clients that demand both strategy and communications from a single source," Sharp said. "All clients will benefit from Thread's expertise in integrating online, mobile and digital media solutions with strong creative, advertising and public relations."

"The two firms have complimentary expertise and similar cultures - it is a great fit," said Luetke. "Longstanding FLS clients who have been asking for stronger social media solutions - including our political and civic sector clients -- will particularly benefit from the new partnership."

On a growth track in recent years, Thread has been strategically filling the Team Orange basket of expertise by hiring key employees in the areas of strategy, integrated communications and digital advertising. It's served them well, as during the past year alone, Thread has added a big batch of new clients in the healthcare, education, manufacturing and resort/leisure industries. Companies like Henry Ford Health System (greater Detroit), Uckele Health & Nutrition, Blue Harbor Spa & Resort and Technibus, compliment an impressive list of existing clients including Lourdes University, GM Performance Division, AC Delco and Chase Brass & Copper, to name a few. The FLS client roster serves notable clients as well, including Mercy, the Toledo Zoo, Westfield Franklin Park, the YMCA and JCC of Greater Toledo, and Toledo Public Schools.

"It's an exciting time to be at Thread! We are thrilled with the success that we have achieved in recent years and are exhilarated by a bright future ahead," said Judy McFarland, President of Thread Marketing Group. "Our entire roster of clients will benefit from the new strategic partnership, our amazing new office space and the level of expertise found within."

Team Orange spirit is like no other, with camaraderie, energy and fresh ideas. Learn more at www.threadgroup.com.

Social Media Update

Introducing New Facebook Pages

As you may have noticed, new Facebook Pages went live on March 30 (check out the AdClub's page at:  www.facebook.com/advertisingclubtoledo)

Facebook brought a lot of new functionality to the new design. New features include:

  • Cover Page - A cover is the larger image at the top of the Page, right above the Page's profile picture. Like a profile picture, cover images are public, which means anyone visiting your Page will be able to see them.

Add a unique cover photo and showcase your most important news on your Page timeline.

  • Pinning - Pinned posts are Page posts that admins have chosen to display prominently at the top of their Page. A pinned post always appears in the top left of a Page's timeline and has a flag in its top-right corner. A post a Page admin pins to the top of their Page will remain there for 7 days. After that, it'll return to the date it was posted on the Page's timeline.

Pin a new post to the top of your Page each week so people notice what's important.

  • Starring a Post - You can highlight any post on your Page by starring it:
    1. Hover over a story on your Page's timeline
    2. Click *

This allows you to highlight the posts you think are important. When you star a post, it expands to widescreen.

  • Easier Administration - The admin panel is a place where you can respond to people using your Page and quickly see how your Page is performing.

From your admin panel, you can:

    1. View notifications
    2. Respond to messages
    3. View your Page insights
    4. Access your activity log to curate content on your Page
    5. Access the Edit menu to make changes to your Page's settings

Open the admin panel by clicking Admin Panel above the date selector in the upper-right corner of your Page. To close your admin panel, click the Hide button in the top-right corner.

Non-admins who visit your Page won't see the admin panel. It's only available to your Page's admins.
See and respond to your recent activity and private messages right from the top of your Page.

Visit the Pages section of the help center to learn more about the changes.

The AdClub uses our Facebook Page in several ways:

  • Branding - As advertisers and marketers, most of us are engaging in social media to build up a brand, promote our company or build our networks. The AdClub uses Facebook and other social media tools as a compliment to other more traditional forms of advertising. It's another tool that we add to a well-rounded marketing mix.
  • Promoting Events and Creating Buzz - The key is great content, such as posts, comments, likes, links, photos, etc. We welcome you to like and/or post relevant content to the AdClub's Page.
  • Tracking Success - Our Page administrators are interested in understanding what type of content people are most interesting in consuming. To help us with this, we use Facebook Insights to measure activity on our Page. Keeping track of what content people are most engaged with will allow us to post more of that type of content.

Check out the AdClub's page at:
