Who Am I?
My place of birth is: Toledo, Ohio There's no place like home. My hobbies are: Golf, anything in or on the water, and beer tasting. The last good book I read was: Any book I read to my kids before bed. My oddest habit is: Nail Biting (and I hate it) Device I couldn't live without: iPhone, like most of the world I guess My greatest accomplishment outside my profession: Being a dad of two great boys. How did I get into advertising/marketing: By Chance. Started what I thought was going to be a summer job and opportunities came along and I choose wisely. Biggest influences on me professionally: Joe Metzger BEST Mentor ever! When nobody's looking, I like to: Check Facebook; my newest bad habit. The one thing I really want the world to know about me: I care a lot more than people may think. Best thing about being an AdClub member: I love walking into AdClub events and seeing people I have not seen in a while. AdClub does a great job of pulling people out of hiding. I am:

And what a night it was! ADDY night 2012 is but a memory now, and if you missed it, you missed the event of the year. Over 300 people enjoyed cocktails, browsing the entries, and watching the winners being announced during this year's live show. Hilarious videos and an interesting line-up of presenters kept it moving as we built up to the winners and the Best of Show. For all the results, click on this ADDY Winners link. A big thanks goes to Michael Seay and his entire merry band of mirth makers. And I again want to thank the UT Department of External Communications for the concept and design work, all the sponsors and in-kind donors, and the many committee members and volunteers who helped with collection, judging day, ADDY production, and event set-up and tear down. We could not do it without you. The biggest thank you goes to Executive Director Patty Schoepf for all of her planning and hard work that makes it all look so easy. Congratulations to Jerry Brown, our Silver Medal Award winner. He is truly deserving of this distinguished honor. We still have a few official 2012 ADDY Dog Tags on sale for only $5. This trendy fashion statement will not only complement any wardrobe, it will help to fund the ROTC program at UT, which helped with the ADDY show in so many ways. See? I told you that you missed quite the show. To make up for it, you can buy your own ADDY Dog Tags. Contact Patty for all the details. Want to be a part of all the fun? Here's your chance! We're looking for a few members who want to increase their business contacts and have a showcase for their talents, whatever those may be. Be ACTive and become a member of the Board of Governors! We meet monthly for an hour over lunch and everyone works on a committee, like Social events, Programs and speakers, Marketing & PR, and even ADDY Awards! In all honesty, I have made some lifelong friends through my Board involvement, and I treasure every experience. Do yourself a favor and join the Board. And speaking of fun, the annual bowling event, AdPIN is scheduled for Friday, March 23 at Rossford Lanes. This year, we're having Glow Bowling, so drag out your Day-Glo clothes and head to the alleys for some adult beverages, big sandwiches and a lot of laughs. Don't have a team but want to bowl? Call the AdClub office to see if any teams are short of a bowler. I hope to see you all on Wednesday, March 21 at the Toledo Club for our monthly luncheon. The speaker, Kimberly Kaufman will talk about her success in marketing to a very small niche target audience. And for this month's Need A Hand/Lend A Hand Collection, please bring an item from the Beach House Wish List. The Beach House is a family shelter that has helped needy families in Toledo for decades. Every item you bring buys you a chance for a $25 gift certificate for The Andersons. Patty is taking reservations now, so there are no excuses. See you there! Kathy Jex 2011-2012 AdClub President |

In Memory of
Mr. Jim Gilbert
|
Last month, former AdClub President and 1981 Silver Medal Award winner, Jim Gilbert, passed away. Jim was one of the major players in the Toledo advertising scene back when Mad Men were sipping their martinis.
A few years ago, I had the pleasure of spending some time with Jim and interviewing him about those early days in his career, which began shortly after WWII. We are reprinting the full transcript of that conversation as a tribute to the memory of Jim Gilbert. If you knew Jim, you may find out something you didn't know. And if you didn't know him, take a few minutes to travel back to a different time, when everything was done by hand. Thanks for the story, Jim. We'll miss you.

ADDY Awards Congratulations & Thank You
Congratulations to all the ADDY winners and to our Silver Medal Award winner, Jerry Brown of BusinessVoice.
Special thanks to the University of Toledo Division of External Affairs for concept and design of this year's creative materials. We are so appreciative of ALL our sponsors. Without you, we would not be able to offer an evening like we did at The Pinnacle.
We are proud and humbled to be part of such a wonderfully giving and creative community of professionals.
The ADDYs aren't easy to coordinate and execute. Job very well done by our co-chairs Micheal Seay and Suzette Kanarowski. Congratulations and thank you to everyone who had a hand in creating and delivering the live ADDY show.
A very special nod to our MC and host Michael Seay who for the second year in a row, gave us one of the most entertaining and seamless ADDY shows we've ever had. Can't wait to see what he comes up with next year!

2012 Silver Medal Award goes to ...

Jerry Brown founded BusinessVoice as an On Hold Marketing (OHM) agency in 1989. At the time, there were relatively few companies that provided OHM, let alone specialized in the service, but Jerry had the foresight to see that On Hold Marketing could become an important tool for all types of businesses. Today, there are several hundred OHM providers in the United States alone. As President of BusinessVoice, Jerry oversees the strategic direction of the agency. He is also a National Account Executive and an active member of the marketing team. Over the last 23 years, Jerry's vision has led to the development of many other services, from TeleGreeting and the BusinessVoice News Network, to LobbyVision In-Store Video, Point-Of-Purchase Audio, and Aroma Marketing. Through WebArt, its in-house web company, BusinessVoice also provides Website Design and Development, Website Marketing and Email Marketing. Today, BusinessVoice delivers services that impact its clients at three "points of entry" - their telephone, website and front door. By re-positioning the agency as a provider of "Point-Of-Entry Marketing" solutions, Jerry Brown has further distinguished BusinessVoice in the minds of prospective clients. The BusinessVoice team now helps clients build customer share on the phone, on-site and online at thousands of locations across the country. Jerry is a founding member of the On Hold Messaging Association, an international trade organization that promotes the benefits of OHM and works to maintain the high professional standards of its more than 60 member companies. He has served as the association's Chairman and as the head of the Marketing Committee. Jerry also has been very active in the Advertising Club of Toledo. He has served as President, Vice President, ADDY Chairman and Auction Chairman. Under Jerry's leadership, BusinessVoice has been recognized more than 100 times by local, regional and national award competitions for creative and marketing excellence. These honors include Best of Show at the 2009 5th District ADDYs, two local Best of Show ADDY awards, three Judge's Choice ADDYs, and three 5th District ADDYs, plus several category ADDYs and certificates. In addition to supporting Ad Club programs that benefit the community, Jerry has taken an active role in helping others. For many years, Jerry and BusinessVoice donated time, money, food and other supplies to the Huntington Center in Sylvania, Ohio. The center was also the beneficiary of several fundraising efforts by BusinessVoice employees. For several years, Jerry has worked on behalf of Toledo's Old Newsboys, raising money for their programs that support needy children. He recruits BusinessVoice employees and others to volunteer their time during the Newsboys' annual paper sale fundraiser. Jerry also spent many seasons as a volunteer football coach, working with young athletes to impart his skills and experience. When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005, Jerry came to the rescue of Profit On Hold, a competitor and fellow member of the On Hold Messaging Association. Jerry donated digital OHM systems and the production / studio services of BusinessVoice to help the company stay in business after the area's devastating floods. Jerry Brown is a multi-faceted man: a client-focused Account Executive; a committed leader; a visionary entrepreneur; an athlete and musician. But, perhaps most importantly, he is a loving, dedicated father to his two sons, a tremendous friend, and a warm, generous human being. He rejoices in everyday life and inspires those around him to excel in all that they do. Who could hope for a more profound legacy? Congratulations, Jerry.

Geliaprovided by: Christine Kilman Gelia (pronounced g-el-ee'-ah) the first question people ask is "how do you pronounce that?" The second question is "what do you do?" That answer is a little more complicated. Integrated marketing communications is a term that's used a bit loosely these days. At Gelia, we define it as the ability to devise a comprehensive strategy, marry traditional and digital advertising, increase online conversions, deliver globally and measure results. But maybe that's just us. Our clients are leaders in their respective industries - or determined to be. They are strong regional, national and global companies who recognize the necessity of a strategic approach. Whether they must increase awareness, change perceptions, or drive sales, we understand how to build the foundation for those efforts from the ground up. How do we accomplish this? With our proprietary process Vantage Point™. Gelia brings together key players from all levels: Executives, Line of Business Managers, Product Managers, Marketing and Sales. We speak everyone's language and seek to understand everyone's role and motivation. What do you gain from Vantage Point? Consensus building among these many silos. Deeper knowledge of your brand, your colleagues' perspectives and the marcom planning process. A determination of your market segment, target audience, positioning strategy and point of differentiation. And finally, a strategic plan that will guide all of us going forward. http://www.gelia.com/strategy.html It all starts with gaining a true understanding of where you stand in the marketplace, and our best-in-class Mindshare research facility gives us a major advantage. Gelia Mindshare provides quantitative research capabilities ranging from consumer and B2B field surveys to focus groups held at our advanced research facility. Developed by researchers with 25 years of experience worldwide, Mindshare is a full-service research provider, with expertise designing research programs and leveraging research data to answer marketing questions. Results. Talk about a broad term. That could mean millions of units moved or one vital opinion changed. It could mean an impossible budget met or the exact e-blast respondents identified. Or it could just mean a much-needed brand lift. Whatever the results you're looking for, we have a best-in-class scorecard to measure our impact. Established in 1961, Gelia has 95 employees with Cap billings of $54 million and offices in Toledo, Ohio; Buffalo, New York; Detroit, Michigan and Peoria, Illinois. Gelia is a shareholder in the largest owner-operated marketing communications network Worldwide Partners. A global advertising network with agencies in 53 countries which gives us access to 90 partners worldwide that can help with everything from understanding cultural nuances to executing campaigns in-country.
