Who Am I?

Creative Director, Marketing & Communications, Bowling Green State University. BGSU alum. Husband. Father of three. Guitarist. Boater. Handyman and occasional mechanic, plumber, carpenter, welder & landscaper :)

My place of birth is:
Toledo, O-H-I-O

My hobbies are:
Boating, fishing, camping, ATVing, water skiing and any outdoor fun with family and friends. Playing guitar.  And fixing virtually everything and anything that needs repaired, built, dismantled, overhauled or modified..somehow this has become a daily "hobby" of mine.

The last good book I read was:
2011 Harris Flotebote Owners Manual

My oddest habit is:
Eating M&M's. Peanut.

Device I couldn't live without:
hmmm....my iPhone, or my iPad....or my G5....can I get back to you on that one?

My greatest accomplishment outside my profession:
My wife and kids.

I also make a pretty mean New England clam chowder.

Outside of graphic design, I designed the Biletnikoff Trophy for the best NCAA collegiate football receiver. I have also designed the Gateway to World Peace memorial and monument in Hiroshima, Japan.

The reason I got into advertising/marketing:
Couldn't get a job at JEEP. But since I had won a Toledo Zoo poster contest in the Fourth grade, I decided that I should pursue this avenue and leave the auto industry to the pros.

Biggest influences on me professionally:
I had a number of instructors who were significant mentors to me while an undergrad at BGSU. George Moy and Mark Zust were really motivational and brought inspiration, critical thinking and creative approaches to design. They also brought perspective and a real-world sense of design as a business. After college, I would have to say that any strong design and conceptual product that I encounter would influence and motivate me. Products from collateral to tv spots and exhibits to print, an engaging design paired with a unique idea, regardless of budget, can have a great influence on me. Keeping an eye on branding, continuity and building brand equity has influenced new ways to my approach in everyday work.

My greatest unfulfilled ambition is:
Being the lead singer of a beach party rock band.

When nobody's looking, I like to:
I never miss an opportunity to air guitar.

Best thing about being an AdClub member:
The ADDYS® ;-)

Greetings!

Kathy Jex ADV
Kathy Jex
2011-2012
AdClub President

Time has done it again. Suddenly, I'm reaching the half way point in the fiscal AdClub year, cold weather has arrived, and the holidays are upon us. Seems like summer was yesterday. I feel good about the progress your AdClub Board has made in trying to chart the way to another hundred years of serving the advertising and marketing industry in the greater Toledo area. I hope you have been able to attend our recent luncheon meetings and AdWORKS, where we have presented some nationally-known speakers on the latest topics to keep you on the forefront of the industry. I've learned new things that I am putting into practice with clients, and creating billable hours for me. I don't know about you, but I love to grow my business while offering my clients the latest tool in the marketing arsenal, which then helps to grow their business, too. Isn't capitalism a wonderful thing?

Speaking of capitalism, that orgy of spending known as the holiday shopping season is here! Wondering what to buy for everyone on your shopping list? The AdClub is pleased to once again bring you "Our Favorite Things" with Westfield Franklin Park Mall and Levis Commons. Join us at the Toledo Club on December 7 for what has become one of our favorite events. Chrys Peterson will again guide us through the most creative and exciting holiday gifts this season from stores at both shopping meccas. Enjoy a delicious holiday-themed lunch while we draw names for lots of exciting give-aways, like gift cards and certificates for local restaurants and stores. Contact Patty at the AdClub office for reservations. And bring some socks for Hannah's Socks and the chance to win special prizes!

As the calendar year winds down, think about all of the fabulous work you've created over the year, and pull out your best. It's time to prepare your ADDY submissions for this year's celebration of creativity. ADDY Call for Entries will be in your mailbox soon, and now that you have your 2012 calendar, mark Friday, January 6 as ADDY Collection day.

And if you'd like to help with entry collection, judging day assistance, the ADDY show, or event set-up and tear-down, please contact Patty, and we'll find you a slot. Volunteering on a committee is one of the best ways to maximize your AdClub membership. Besides the ADDYs, we have a variety of committees that need your assistance with events or projects. Get involved and be ACTive!

Finally, I'd like to wish everyone the best for the holidays. Please take the time to reflect on your blessings and remember those who are less fortunate. See you at Our Favorite Things!

ADDY Award Graphic

About the ADDY Awards

Conducted annually by the American Advertising Federation (AAF), the local ADDY Awards is the first of a three-tier, national competition. Concurrently, all across the country, local entrants vie for recognition as the very best in their markets. At the second tier, local winners compete against other winners in one of 14 district competitions. District winners are then forwarded to the third tier, the national ADDY Awards competition.  Entry in your local ADDY competition is the first step toward winning a national ADDY.

The Advertising Club of Toledo is a member of the 5th District AAF (Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky).

Hannah's Socks

Thank you for your donation!

Socks were collected at the November 16 program to benefit Hannah's Socks.  Patrick Giammarco presented almost 200 pairs to Hannah's Socks board chair, Dawn Christen at the "Socks for the Sole" event held at Maumee Wines on the evening of 11/16. Dawn, and Hannah's father Vic Turner, were very appreciative and emphasized that the AdClub's donation will go a long way to help the situations of those less fortunate in our area this holiday season.
