Who Am I?

My place of birth is:

Newark, Ohio

My hobbies are:

Gardening, cooking, reading and watching college sports

The last good book I read was:

A cheap, trashy romance novel

My oddest habit is:

Carrying on long conversations with my dog Jack as we amble our farm.  Neither of us, however, think it is odd.

Device I couldn't live without:

Toss up between my iPhone and my hair dryer

My greatest accomplishment outside my profession:

Raising two wonderful children and watching them become amazing adults

The reason I got into advertising/marketing:

I was born this way! When I was 5, I sold bags of dirt for a nickel to my neighbor ladies as Magic Beauty Mud!

Biggest influences on me professionally:

My dad, Jim Grady.  He taught me how to be ethical, authentic, honest, willing to share and learn and most of all, be myself.  I carry his business card in front of mine so I always remember to treat people as Jim Grady would.

My greatest unfulfilled ambition is:

I want to travel Ireland with my kids.

When nobody's looking, I like to:

Car dance

The one thing I really want the world to know about me:

Believe it or not, at times I can be shy.

Best thing about being an AdClub member:

Keeping connected with other marketing professionals and stealing their ideas!

Greetings!

Kathy Jex ADV
Kathy Jex
2011-2012
AdClub President

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition."

Steve Jobs

I know that much has been written and said about Steve Jobs in the past few weeks, but I couldn't let the opportunity pass without reflecting on the changes that his creative genius brought about in the advertising business. With the advent of the Macintosh, the tools and functions of our industry completely changed. Like the buggy makers before Henry Ford, typesetters and keyliners became obsolete. What was once done by hand, using X-Acto knives, rubber cement and mechanical T-squares, is now done in an instant with the click of a mouse. Our black-and-white world went 4-color.  And his what-ifs didn't stop there, with increasing technological advances and unheard-of devices he revolutionized not only the way we work, but the way we connect and communicate with our clients and the world. Thanks, Steve. We'll miss you.

Our November luncheon should be of interest to just about anyone interested in digital marketing, PR, social media and communications, and that's just about everyone. Andrea Vascellari, CEO of itive.net, founder of media channel VMC, and blogger, will be at the Toledo Club on Wednesday, November 16, to share his unique insight and knowledge. Thanks to Joe Pinciotti for bringing us this international superstar in the on-line marketing world. And don't forget to bring a pair of socks! We're collecting them at the luncheon for Hannah's Socks, a local organization that provides warm clothing for the homeless and needy.

And I hope you're all planning your ADDY entries! The call for entries will be coming soon, so keep your eyes open. Collection will be Friday, January 6 at PointSeven Studios again.  Thank you Eric Eggly!  This year's show will be at The Pinnacle on February 23, and it promises to be another exciting and fun-filled evening. Who will win this year's Silver Medal Award? Know somebody who is worthy? Get your nomination in before November 21.

Finally, a big thanks to AdWORKS Chair, Sara Shiels and committee members Karen Hopkinson, Cindy Hauff, Leasa Maxx, Patrick Giammarco, Steve Israel, and Tim Speweik for the donation of their time and their talents. They booked speakers, found sponsors, and took care of about a million little details that went into making a successful event. Also stepping up to help us this year with financial or in-kind donations were Presenting Sponsor The Blade, H.O.T. Printing & Graphics, Maxx Marketing & Design, Cumulus Toledo, PromoHits, Toledo & Signature Harley-Davidson, R/P Marketing Public Relations, Perry Corporation, 2020 Exhibits, Off Contact Productions, Mail Works, Commerce Paper, Adams Street Publishing, AIM Specialists, Buckeye TeleSystem, in-house communications, LaPrensa, The University of Toledo Department of Theatre & Film, and Time Warner Cable Media. Please help us thank these businesses with your patronage. They care enough about AdClub to support our programs and our members, so please return the favor with your support of their businesses.

See you soon!

About the ADDY Awards

Conducted annually by the American Advertising Federation (AAF), the local ADDY Awards is the first of a three-tier, national competition. Concurrently, all across the country, local entrants vie for recognition as the very best in their markets. At the second tier, local winners compete against other winners in one of 14 district competitions. District winners are then forwarded to the third tier, the national ADDY Awards competition.  Entry in your local ADDY competition is the first step toward winning a national ADDY.

The Advertising Club of Toledo is a member of the 5th District AAF (Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky).

AdWORKS 2011 Graphic

written by:  Sara Shiels

Another successful year of AdWORKS is behind us! Thank you so much to all who attended; we had such a great lineup of speakers that I hope you all were inspired as you headed in to your weekend. I know I picked up some useful tips from Beth Platek from Google. Scott Beck from Harley-Davidson hit home with me, but I think everyone was able to be inspired Scott's message of always evaluating and keeping your message fresh and relevant. I heard great rumblings from those that attended Patrick Donnelly's session about QR codes, but I attended Mike Carlton's presention reminding us that great advancements come from innovation and the future and are not based on the past. The day ended with Matt Canzano giving the evolution of the Pure Michgan campaign, what a great way to wrap up the day!

And a very special Thank You to our sponsors - http://adclubtoledo.org/adworks/adworks-sponsors/ - your support is greatly appreciated and is so necessary in making events like AdWORKS a success! We truly appreciate your support of the Advertising Club of Toledo. Maxx Marketing & Design and H.O.T. Printing & Graphics were true superheroes in their work on developing the empowering characters of AdWORKS 2011 - thanks for all you brought to this event! I would also like to personally thank the committee for AdWORKS - Patrick Giammarco, Karen Hopkinson, Kathy Jex, Steve Israel, Tim Speweik, and Patty Schoepf. Your dedication to the Board and this event brings great things to our advertising community! And remember, you don't have to be a board member to be on an event committee. Be ACTive - get involved with your AdClub to make the most of your membership!

See you all at AdWORKS 2012

Hart Launches New Brand Identity; Deepens Client Service Investments

Hart Associates has launched a new brand identity as part of a phased approach to expanding its range of client services. The integrated marketing communications firm has introduced a fresh visual identity and logo as well as a reinvented web site, www.hartinc.com, which provides a comprehensive view of its people, work and capabilities.

As rapid change takes hold of the advertising and marketing industries, Hart recognizes that, to grow as a valued client partner, it must change, too. Hart constantly is refining the techniques it uses to help organizations connect with customers and consumers on a deeper, more relevant level, as a means of achieving stellar business results.

"It is critical for marketers to change as fast as the industry does in order to remain competitive," said Mike Hart, president and CEO. "With increasingly empowered consumers, the digital universe at their fingertips and the advent of new technologies, the way advertising is created, consumed and measured literally is being transformed."

Hart's brand identity will continue to evolve in the coming months as it deepens its investment in client services such as digital and social media marketing, research and analytics and specialized communication services designed for senior executives.

"The visible changes to Hart's identity are just the first stage of what's to come," said Marc Paulenich, the agency's chief operating officer and vice president of strategy. "The client loyalty Hart enjoys today will grow even stronger as we help our partners integrate additional cutting-edge capabilities into their marketing mix."
