Greetings!

Kathy Jex ADV
Kathy Jex
2011-2012
AdClub President

Get psyched! September is upon us and it's time to get back to work. Your AdClub Board has been busy all summer planning events and lining up speakers to make our 2011-2012 activities fun and informative.

First off, I want to salute the valiant and brave volleyball teams who waited out the storm to finish the annual sand volleyball party we like to call AdBASH. Definitely an event that will be remembered and talked about for years to come. I'm not sure if it has ever actually hailed during the tournament before, although I do remember one at LaJolla Beach Volleyball Club when the tornado sirens went off. Now that was a storm! So if you missed it this year, start getting your team together now for AdBASH 2012 and another memorable event. Thanks to Greg Reece and Tim Speweik for putting together the festivities.

And speaking of events, on September 21 we kick off this year's Monthly Luncheon Programs with a presentation from Matt Harlow of Perry Ballard in St. Joseph, MI. Matt has put together a new program specifically for us on professional applications for social media. He'll go into business to business ideas and applications for sales professionals. Check out his message to you at http://www.harcorps.com/ and make your reservations for a fun and educational luncheon.

Can't forget to mention AdWORKS! Sara Shiels and Karen Hopkinson have been slaving away, combing the nation for exciting and relevant speakers and boy are they good. We've got an exciting line-up for October 14 that will include marketing and advertising experts from Harley-Davidson and Google. We are especially pleased that The Blade has agreed to be our Presenting Sponsor this year. Lots of sponsorship opportunities are still available, so check it out on our website while you make your reservations for the day. Thanks to Maxx Marketing & Design and H.O.T. Printing & Graphics for the "super" design and printing for the invitation. Coming soon to a mailbox near you!

I hope to see you at these great upcoming events. Support your AdClub, have a little fun and learn something at the same time. It's a win-win situation.

Social Networking is easy if you are a rock star or an iconic lifestyle brand like Corvette or even if you are involved in politically charged issues like the Tea Party or Save the Children.  But what if you sell printing or you are a designer from Maumee?  How do you connect with your market place socially if your product isn't inherently sexy?  We'll run through some classic social marketing case studies, explore different social networking channels and dig into some how-to that just might help you market exciting or even less than exciting products via social marketing channels.  We'll have some fun and learn a few things that you can put to work immediately.

About Matt:

Matt Harlow has spent his entire professional life helping companies project the best possible brands to their prospects and live up to their brands for their customers.  He's been involved in the American Advertising Federation since college and has served at the local, district and national levels in the organization as a professional.  He has spoken to advertising and marketing organizations across America and taught several college advertising classes.

"I'm one of the luckiest people I know. I love what I do. I love the feeling when research on a new market or a product line clicks into place and it all makes sense. I enjoy the planning and the strategy and helping my clients solve their problems and increase sales." said Matt, "I started teaching and speaking to help pay back the profession I love".

Matt has BAs in Marketing and Advertising as well as an MBA from The Ohio State University.  He has been in agency account service since 1987 and never regretted a minute of it! Currently he is the Director of Account Services at Perry Ballard, Inc., an advertising/marketing firm in St. Joseph, Michigan.

Matt would like to try a social experiment during our meeting.  To do so, he needs LinkedIn contacts and Facebook friends from the Toledo area.  Take a minute and connect with Matt at

The worst thing that can happen is other people will think you know the speaker!

Company Profile

Adams Street Publishing

provided by:  Collette Jacobs

Reaching over 270,000 readers each month with five publications - Toledo City Paper, Toledo Parent News, Ann Arbor Family, Ann Arbor's Current magazine and Findlay Family - Adams Street Publishing Co. has been building a community of readers for almost 20 years. These publications reach a highly educated, influential audience of individuals who are informed participants in the community around them - a psychographic highly sought after by advertisers with important messages to deliver.

A family affair from the beginning, Collette Jacobs began publishing Toledo Area Parent in 1992 out of a spare bedroom in her home. With a staff of two part time working moms, the challenge of putting out the free monthly publication equaled the challenge of raising a two-year old and a newborn. The paper was a rousing success filling a need for families throughout the area for helpful parenting advice while providing a forum for exchange between local businesses/service providers and information hungry young families.

In 1997, we saw the need for a true alternative weekly in the area, and the Toledo City Paper was born. With the additional title came a move to the company's current office location on the corner of Adams and 12th in downtown. The paper rapidly became an area "go to" source for arts, entertainment and news commentary, consistently offering up informative coverage of local politics, food, arts & entertainment and other things our Toledoans wouldn't read about from any other source. We've developed a strong connection with our community, sponsoring events, hosting shows and remaining an integral part of what makes Toledo great.

Our Annual Best of Toledo awards, chosen by our readers, are a badge of honor for local businesses and personalities.

In recent years, we've grown further, expanding into the Findlay and Ann Arbor Markets. Ann Arbor Family and Findlay Area Family boast the same consistent quality as Toledo Area Parent, but contain local information for their home cities. We acquired Ann Arbor's monthly arts and entertainment magazine, Current, four years ago. Current has been in Ann Arbor for over twenty years is filled with news and events, provided by a dedicated and professional group of writers who know their city like a friend.

International Boxing Club

Need a Hand, Lend a Hand Success Story

written by:  Kathy Jex, in-house communications

Many thanks to fellow AdClub members Patrick Giammarco and Jerry Brown for helping with a summer project at the International Boxing Club. Executive Director Harry Cummins enlisted my assistance with putting together a business plan competition for the young members of the IBC who are hoping to become entrepreneurs in the future. The 3 high school students listened to guest lecturers who instructed them on various components of business and marketing. They then gave presentations to a panel of judges, as if presenting their business plans and asking for startup capital from potential investors. Patrick was an instructor on web sites, internet marketing and social media. Jerry served on the panel of judges that also included Laila Waggoner from R/P Marketing Public Relations and Joshua Peterson from the law firm of Eastman & Smith. Also assisting me with instruction were Pat Dutched of Bookkeeping In A Box and Bruce Lazar of Eastman & Smith.

And special thanks to former AdClub President Vicky Brymer, who sharpened her trophy assembly and engraving skills for me to create awards for our young entrepreneurs. Their contributions mean more than they know to future businessmen Trayvone, Louis and Ryan.

Lend A Hand...

If you're interested in volunteering to assist one of the organizations, please submit the volunteer form and we'll match you up with the appropriate contact person.
