May is Nat'l Allergy & Asthma Awareness Month, and Food Allergy Awareness, too
Conquering Food Anxiety for those with Food Allergies

Helping to reduce anxiety is key for children diagnosed with food allergies
According to the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN), as many as 12 million Americans have a food allergy. Milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, soy and wheat are responsible for most food allergies, according to FAAN. Each year FAAN devotes the second week of May to food allergies awareness. The entire month of May is designated as National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month.
"For parents who have had to endure the frightening experience of seeing their child's reaction to a food allergy, this fear may later evolve into the child having anxiety about food as they get older," states Derrick R. Ward, M.D., a board certified and fellowship trained physician at Kansas City Allergy and Asthma Associates, P.A. who sees patients in KCAA's Independence, Overland Park and Olathe offices.
"We spend time with the parents or guardians and help with education, food preparation and other tips about coping with a food allergy. It is especially important that grandparents, caregivers, teachers and friends know about the child's food allergy especially if they are very young and unable to explain it for themselves. Our KCAA website, www.kcallergy.com is full of information and helpful links to other food allergy and asthma sites including FAAN's site, www.foodallergy.org and the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, www.acaai.com."
What is a food allergy? Jeffrey A. Wald, M.D., a KCAA board certified and fellowship trained physician explains, "A food allergy is an abnormal response to a food triggered by your body's immune system. Allergic reactions to food can sometimes cause serious illness and even death. Tree nuts and peanuts are the leading causes of deadly allergic reactions called anaphylaxis."
