Winter Weather Care Tip:
Nurse and Child Is It Just A Cold Or Allergies?

It is the time of year when children are inside more sharing germs and the common cold. However, sometimes for allergy sufferers it is hard to determine if it is the common cold or an allergy flare up. With a cough, a runny nose and congestion you may be asking, is it allergies or a cold?

Colds come from hundreds of different viruses. Your immune system attacks when one of the viruses gets into your body. Some of the effects of this immune response are a cold's classic symptoms such as congestion and coughing. Cold germs are contagious and easily shared. After a couple of weeks, at the most, your immune system fights off the virus and you stop having symptoms.

Allergens are caused by an overactive immune system. For some reason, your body mistakes harmless substances - such as mold or pollen - for germs and attacks them. Your body releases chemicals such as histamine like it does when fighting a cold. This can cause swelling in your nasal passages, coughing, sneezing and a runny nose. Allergies are not contagious, although some people may inherit the tendency to develop them. (Click here for rest of the story...) Source: KCAA physicians, AAAAI, NIH

KCAA's Dr. Wald Receives "Friend of Education" Award

for Dedication to Education

Dr. Wald has been awarded a "Friend of Education" designation by Blue Valley School District. Judy Trout of the Blue Valley School District notified KCAA Administrator, DuVonne Campbell on October 1, 2010 that Dr. Wald will receive the award because of his long term commitment and ongoing volunteer services to the district schools.

Dr. Wald has been very supportive of health programs in the district including writing orders for epinephrine injectable pens, speaking to school nurses on health issues, and providing funding for health supplies.

Last year, Dr. Wald along with the other KCAA physicians awarded funds to five school districts in the metro including a contribution to Blue Valley School district.

KCAA Sponsor of "Pumpkin Hollow" at Deanna Rose Farmstead

What fun! KCAA Manager, DuVonne Campbell and Bethany of KCAA had while at Pumpkin Hollow. Throughout October, KCAA staffers were at Deanna Rose Farmstead's Annual Pumpkin Hollow distributing "treat bags" filled with goodies.

"We really enjoyed this opportunity to visit with families, and to distribute over 1,000 of the bags filled with patient education information about allergies and asthma," said DuVonne.
