Street Smarts with

NEWK'S and Susan G. Komen

On Friday, June 17th over 80 women from the Birmingham area homeless community gathered at the Church of the Reconciler for the launch of a new innovative breast cancer awareness program called "Street Smarts." The women enjoyed lunch, complimentary of NEWK'S Express Caf, and were treated to manicures, facials, and haircuts. Street Smarts was created by Dr. Cynthia Ryan, an English professor at UAB who has worked closely with this community for the past year and a half and who also is a two-time survivor of breast cancer. The program was in partnership with North Central Alabama Susan G. Komen for the Cure and had two specific objectives: 1) to address each woman's self and body image and 2) to deliver concise,

komen

realistic messages about breast cancer risk reduction, screening, and treatment options. Registered nurses from Cooper Green provided an educational session tailored to their unique perspective. At the end of the event each participant received a tote bag bearing the message "Cancer Ain't Crazy, It's Serious", that included a number of toiletry products to extend the message about self care. Ellen Zahariadis, Executive Director, said, "We are challenged to expand our community outreach programs and awareness messages to reach a population of women who are all too often forgotten and overlooked in regard to such services and programs. We cannot forget about them and will not overlook their need thanks to the dedication and leadership of Cynthia Ryan and her already great work in the community."

Thank you to all of the volunteers that donated their time to help with the event as well as those who donated toiletry items that were needed. There are plans to hold another Street Smarts program in the fall! To learn more about cancer and the homeless community, Click Here to read Dr. Ryan's magazine article "Homeless with Cancer."
