CityBeat "Best of Cincinnati 2011"
Staff Picks: UCAN Best Spay/Neuter Clinic
Article reprinted from CityBeat 3-29-11

UCAN, the United Coalition for Animals' Spay / Neuter Clinic, wants you to "imagine a world without euthanasia" by taking action and removing your pet's sex organs. Because it's a nonprofit, even people on an editor's salary can afford to prevent Fifi or Fido from any pregnancy scares by handing them over to UCAN's caring staff. It has a clean, calm and friendly atmosphere. I got my cat spayed there and now she doesn't try to back it up on my guests' feet when she's in heat! You can just get the surgery for cheap, or you can check optional services like shots and flea treatment for really reasonable prices. They also sell animal clothing in various sizes in the lobby. 1230 W. Eighth St., Downtown, 513-721-7387, www.ucancincinnati.org. (Jac Kern)

Board News
UCAN welcomes Morleen (Moe) Rouse, PhD., as our new board chair. Moe is a consultant and former professor of electronic media and communications at the University of Cincinnati and brings with her years of philanthropic involvement and leadership in Greater Cincinnati, as well as a love of animals. Moe, her husband Jack and their canine companions were featured in BEST Magazine's issue of "The Dogs & Their People of Cincinnati 2010." In January, Moe opened Mannequin Boutique, located at 1405-7 Vine Street in historic Over-the- Rhine, whose proceeds go directly to seven local charities, including UCAN.
Retiring board chair, Carol Sanger, will continue to be involved with UCAN as an ex officio board member. Carol provided wonderful leadership and growth during her term at UCAN. We are grateful to her for her dedication to our mission and for being a true friend to animals in need.
We also extend a warm welcome to new board member Melanie S. Corwin, an attorney with Waite, Schneider, Bayless & Chesley Co., LPA.

UCAN Celebrates
30,000 Spays/Neuters
On January 12th, UCAN's clinic performed its 30,000th surgery since opening in April of 2007.
Peanut, an adorable Mountain Cur mix puppy (pictured here with her parent Kenny Himes), was the lucky patient. Peanut recovered from her spay like a champ and was able to go home the same day. When asked how she felt about being part of such a momentous occasion, Peanut merely cocked her head and headed for the car, presumably to get home and spread the word about UCAN.
Reaching 30,000 spays/neuters is a testament to the dedication of our community to solve the problem of pet overpopulation. We are so grateful to everyone who has had their pet fixed, our animal welfare partners and those who continue to support the mission of UCAN. Together we are making a difference by preventing thousands of unwanted dogs and cats from populating the streets and burdening the tri-state's already-overcrowded shelters and rescue groups.

Grants Helping to Provide for Pet Owners with Limited Means
The Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust, a KeyBank trust, has made a one-year renewal grant of $28,000 to help continue our Pets in Need program; a partnership between UCAN and the Freestore Foodbank targeting pets from households in the most under served areas of Greater Cincinnati to provide basic veterinary care, vaccines and wellness checks for cats and dogs whose owners could not otherwise afford it. These pets can also then receive spay and neuter services at greatly reduced fees. Pets in Need clinics are generally held twice per month. The foundation's initial grant helped established the Pets in Need program in 2010.
The Bernice Barbour Foundation, Inc. awarded UCAN $5,000 for subsidized spay/neuter services. Clients of our spay/neuter clinic with documented financial need may have their fees reduced for the spay/neuter of their own pets.
