Fundraising Campaign Surpasses Goal

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to our 2009 Annual Fundraising Campaign. We surpassed our goal of $20,000 by a wide margin!  Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we will be able to continue the UCAN mission of promoting responsible pet ownership by making spay/neuter and essential veterinary services affordable to everyone who can open their hearts and homes to pets.  As a UCAN supporter, you are vital to these efforts!  We pledge to do everything possible to keep UCAN worthy of your continued support.

Dr. Zeke Zekoff, Director of Wellness

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Zeke Zekoff will serve as UCAN's  pro bono Director of Wellness, overseeing UCAN's new "Pets In Need" program.  Dr. Zekoff is the owner of Towne Square Animal Clinic in Blue Ash, and is the immediate past president of the Ohio Animal Health Foundation.  He has served on our Vet Advisory Committee since the clinic opened in 2007.

Dr. Zekoff believes in the importance of the human-animal bond and that everyone should be able to include animals in their lives, whatever their financial circumstances.  In 2002, he helped the Freestore Foodbank (FSFB) organize its first "Pet Health Day," aimed at serving FSFB clients with pets.   In the years that followed, 15 of these free clinics were held, each providing basic wellness services to more than 200 animals in one afternoon, using all-volunteer labor.

Dr. Zekoff approached UCAN last year with the idea of turning these bi-annual clinics into a sustainable, ongoing program.  In cooperation with the FSFB, grant funding was obtained from  the Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust to begin the new program and operate it in the first year.

Helping those in need to provide basic care for their pets is a natural extension of UCAN's mission to end pet overpopulation and we welcome Dr. Zekoff as a part of our team.

Holiday After Hours
Pedigree Interiors hosted its first annual "Holiday After Hours" at the store on the evening of Dec. 1st.  Those who attended enjoyed complimentary wine and holiday goodies while browsing store merchandise and the wares of four unique vendors - Schwartz Jewelers, The Gilded Age, Two Stitches and Ted's Toys. Vendors donated 25% of their profits from the evening.  Store manager Jane Wehmeier extends a special  'thank-you' to Shirley Mills, event coordinator, and all of the volunteers who baked for and staffed the open house. Located in Montgomery Square, Pedigree Interiors is an upscale furniture and  home furnishings consignment store. 100% of its profits support the UCAN clinic.
UCAN Receives Legacy Gift from HSNKY
In late December, UCAN received a surprise from the Humane Society of Northern Kentucky. Due to its founders moving away from the area, the organization ceased operation and distributed its net assets to several  partner organizations, with almost $30,000 going UCAN. We are grateful to the founders, donors and volunteers of HSNKY for entrusting us with this generous gift!
Did You Know?
Besides low-cost spay/neuter services, UCAN also offers vaccine and basic pet wellness clinics on Tuesday mornings and some Saturdays for the pets of low-income qualified individuals. The Tuesday clinics are teaching clinics staffed by Dr. Jennifer Wells and students from the Raymond Walters College Veterinary Technology Program.
